5 nights San Francisco trip
Hi all! We're flying in to SFO Sunday afternoon the 27th, renting a car, and on the way to Mill Valley (where we're staying) we are are thinking of a quick stop at Baker Beach or the Battery Spencer. Monday is reserved for Muir Woods (parking reserved for 9:00am) and other northern woodsy activities. Tuesday is Alcatraz (noon tickets). Wednesday is The Giants game at 12:45. Thursday is open! Fly home on Friday. We are planning on taking the Larkspur ferry from Mill Valley to SF (both seniors and with the Clipper app seems very reasonable). We're not night owls (the last ferry back is at 8:00) but are good with early mornings. If you have suggestions for the Tuesday/Wednesday mornings before and afternoons after Alcatraz / Giants game that would be great. We're leaving Thursday open for maybe Golden Gate Park "features" or overall SF sight seeing. Thoughts?
Your 5-night San Francisco itinerary sounds well-paced, and you’ve already planned some highlights. Here’s a detailed suggestion for mornings and afternoons around Alcatraz, the Giants game, and your open Thursday.
Sunday, Arrival:
- After arriving at SFO and renting your car, stopping at Baker Beach is a great idea for a scenic ocean view, especially of the Golden Gate Bridge. The drive is short from the airport. Alternatively, Battery Spencer offers arguably the best photo viewpoint of the bridge and city; it’s slightly more adventurous with a short hike.
- Since you’re seniors and likely carrying luggage, Baker Beach may be easier for a quick photo stop.
Monday, Muir Woods & Northern Marin:
- With your 9:00am parking reservation, you’ll have most of the morning in the redwoods. Afterward, you could drive to Mount Tamalpais State Park for panoramic views or Stinson Beach for a relaxing stroll and light lunch.
Tuesday, Alcatraz (Noon Tickets):
- Morning (before Alcatraz): Consider a relaxed breakfast in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. You could walk along Pier 39, watch the sea lions, or do a quick visit to Ghirardelli Square for a chocolate treat.
- Afternoon (after Alcatraz): Once you return from Alcatraz (~2:30–3:00pm), explore North Beach for Italian cafes and maybe a visit to Coit Tower for city views. Alternatively, Embarcadero & Ferry Building Marketplace offer leisurely walks and snacks.
Wednesday, Giants Game at 12:45:
- Morning: Early morning could be a walk along Embarcadero or a short visit to Exploratorium if you enjoy science exhibits. A casual coffee nearby works well before heading to the ballpark.
- Afternoon/Evening: Depending on game end (~4:30–5:00pm), you could stroll around Mission Bay or the Ferry Building for dinner or an early evening snack. Heading back on the Larkspur ferry will still get you to Mill Valley comfortably before 8:00pm.
Thursday, Open Day:
- Golden Gate Park: You can pick highlights such as the Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, Conservatory of Flowers, or simply enjoy a casual walk among the gardens and lakes.
- Alternative SF sightseeing: Visit Haight-Ashbury for its historic and colorful streets, Painted Ladies at Alamo Square, or ride a cable car for a classic experience.
- Consider ending the day at Crissy Field or Marina Green for sunset views of the Golden Gate Bridge before returning to Mill Valley.
Tips:
- Use the Clipper App for the Larkspur ferry and local transit; it’s convenient and avoids cash hassle.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as even short walks around SF hills can be tiring.
- Pack light layers—SF weather can shift from foggy mornings to sunny afternoons, especially near the water.
This itinerary balances sightseeing, scenic views, and relaxed pacing suitable for seniors while making the most of your mornings and afternoons around Alcatraz and the Giants game.
