Where to stay post cruise

Hi would really appreciate suggestions for our visit to San Francisco which is end of a cruise so would like to spend a day or two before flying back to uk. Looking for a good area/hotel which has easy access to transport to sightsee best bits. We are all seniors and one with mobility problems. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

For seniors, especially with mobility considerations, staying in a central, flat, and well-connected area of San Francisco is key. You want easy access to major sights, public transportation, and minimal steep hills.

Recommended neighborhoods:

  • Fisherman’s Wharf / North Beach: Very tourist-friendly, flat areas near the waterfront, good for walking and sightseeing. Easy access to Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and boat tours. Plenty of hotels with elevators and mobility-friendly rooms.
  • Union Square: Central location with great hotel options, shopping, and restaurants. Well-connected via Muni buses, cable cars, and BART (for airport/train connections). Less hilly than other areas, though a few streets have gentle slopes.
  • Embarcadero / Financial District: Waterfront area, mostly flat, excellent for walking along the bay. Close to Ferry Building, easy public transport connections, and quieter than Fisherman’s Wharf at night.

Hotel considerations:

  • Choose hotels with elevators and accessible rooms if needed.
  • Hotels close to public transport stops make sightseeing easier without relying on cars.
  • Consider hotels that offer easy airport shuttle options or are close to BART for a smooth transfer back to the airport.

Sample sightseeing plan:

  • Day 1: Walk around Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, and Ghirardelli Square. Take a short Bay cruise if mobility allows.
  • Day 2: Visit Union Square for shopping, ride a cable car (accessible cars available), and explore the Embarcadero, including the Ferry Building Marketplace.

Overall, Fisherman’s Wharf is ideal if you want immediate access to classic tourist spots with minimal walking up hills, while Union Square offers a more central urban experience with great public transport options. Both areas are senior-friendly and accessible.
