China Laos

Hi there, we were planning to go to Laos from London. We were thinking to fly via China and stop for few days 2-3 days. We are planning February so we would prefer a region well connected with flights to Laos and a warm place not too cold. Whic region do you suggest? Thanks Gaby

For a short stopover in China en route to Laos in February, you ideally want a city that is well connected by flights to Laos, has good transport and accommodation options, and enjoys relatively warm weather during that time of year.

The southern regions of China are generally your best bet in February, as northern China will still be quite cold.

  • Kunming, Yunnan Province: Kunming is known as the “Spring City” due to its mild climate year-round. February temperatures are usually around 15–20°C, making it comfortable. Kunming has direct flights to several Laotian cities such as Vientiane and Luang Prabang, and the city offers easy access to short cultural trips, including Stone Forest.
  • Guangzhou, Guangdong Province: Guangzhou is a major international hub in southern China with mild winter temperatures around 15–20°C. There are frequent flights from Guangzhou to Vientiane and other Laotian destinations. The city itself offers food, shopping, and cultural sites if you have a couple of days to explore.
  • Hanoi or nearby border regions: While technically not China, some travelers enter Laos from northern Vietnam after a short stop in southern China like Nanning (Guangxi Province). Nanning has a warm winter climate (around 16–20°C) and flights connecting to Laos, though options may be less frequent than Kunming or Guangzhou.

Considering convenience and weather, Kunming is usually the most recommended option for a warm, culturally interesting, and well-connected stopover on the way to Laos. Guangzhou is also a strong alternative if you prefer a larger city with more amenities and international flight connections.

  • Kunming – warm, good flight connections to Laos, cultural excursions.
  • Guangzhou – major hub, mild winter, plenty of city activities.
  • Nanning – smaller, warm, near northern Laos border, fewer flight options.

In summary, for a 2–3 day stop in February before heading to Laos, focus on southern China’s Kunming or Guangzhou for ease of travel, pleasant temperatures, and interesting local experiences.
