Hong Kong in september ?

Hello everyone

I'd like to go away for a week to discover Hong Kong. I can go in September, from about the 8th to the 15th. Unfortunately it's still typhoon season, I think. What do you think? I wouldn't want to spend a week in the pouring rain. What are the chances?

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Visiting Hong Kong in September is a bit of a gamble weather-wise because it falls within the tail end of the typhoon season, which officially runs from June to October. During this period, Hong Kong can experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, though it’s not guaranteed that a typhoon will hit during your week.

Some points to consider:

  • Average daily temperatures in September are around 28–32°C (82–90°F), with high humidity. It can feel hot and sticky, but mornings and evenings may be slightly cooler.
  • Rainfall is still significant, often in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day rain. You might have days with just a few showers and other days with more persistent rain.
  • Typhoon signals are rare but possible. If a typhoon does occur, some attractions, ferries, and outdoor activities may close temporarily for safety.

Suggestions to make the most of your trip despite the weather uncertainty:

  • Plan flexible activities with a mix of indoor and outdoor options. Museums, shopping malls, Hong Kong Park, and the Science Museum are good indoor alternatives if it rains.
  • Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and typhoon warnings. Hong Kong Observatory provides reliable, up-to-date information.
  • Consider having a backup plan for each day in case rain or storms prevent outdoor sightseeing.

In general, many travelers do visit Hong Kong in September without major disruptions, but being prepared for rain and the possibility of a short-term typhoon is wise. The week could have a mix of sunny and rainy days, so with flexible planning, you can still enjoy your trip.
