Staying in Sheung Wan

We are going to Hong Kong for the first time in April. Our flight lands at 7pm and we'll be staying in Sheung Wan.

What is the approximate cost of a Taxi to Sheung Wan. I'm estimating we should get to our hotel by 830pm. Will there be any restaurants still open at that time?

Sheung Wan is a convenient and lively area on Hong Kong Island, close to Central and plenty of nightlife, so your evening arrival should be manageable.

Taxi from Hong Kong International Airport to Sheung Wan:

The distance is approximately 40 km and typically takes 35–50 minutes depending on traffic. Taxi fares are regulated and include a base fare plus distance charges, plus any tunnel or airport surcharges. For an evening arrival around 7–7:30pm, traffic can be moderate.

  • Approximate cost: HKD 350–450 (around USD 45–58). This includes the airport surcharge (~HKD 30) and potential tolls.
  • Red taxis (operating on Hong Kong Island) are the ones you will take from the airport if headed to Sheung Wan.
  • Ensure you have either cash in HKD or a card accepted by the driver, though cash is preferred.

Restaurants in Sheung Wan at 8:30pm:

Sheung Wan has a mix of local eateries, cafés, and mid-range restaurants. By 8:30pm most will still be open, though smaller local dim sum places may be closing.

  • Mid-range restaurants and international chains are generally open until 10–11pm.
  • Local Cantonese restaurants, noodles, or rice shops are often open until 9–10pm.
  • If you prefer late-night options, small cafés, bars, or takeaway shops stay open later.

In conclusion, taking a taxi is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Sheung Wan from HKIA at that hour, costing roughly HKD 350–450, and you should have no problem finding dinner at 8:30pm in the area.
