Wyndham or Manchester?

Hi all, doing preliminary research for a stay next February (yes, I am bored, snowbound, and way early!)

It would be before and after a cruise. Points booking in either case, so $$ isn't an issue.

I see pros and cons for both properties.

Wyndham has a lovely MCM look about it, and I adore its balconies. And it's easy walking distance to the port, even with a couple of big suitcases and carry-ons. It also advertises a free airport shuttle.

The Manchester, clearly, is a higher-quality property, but we don't have status with Hyatt, and they charge a $42 daily resort fee that I'm unclear whether we'd get out of with a points booking. However, it has a hot tub and the Wyndham doesn't. It also would require an Uber, I think, for the unwieldly luggage. Short drive, granted.

Neither has a free breakfast (boo).

Which would you pick?

Bonus if you have stayed at both :)

Thanks so much!

Both the Wyndham San Diego Bayside and the Manchester Grand Hyatt are excellent choices for a pre- and post-cruise stay, but they offer very different experiences. Since you’re using points, your decision really comes down to convenience vs. luxury, and what amenities actually matter to you on a cruise-focused trip. Below is a detailed comparison to help you choose confidently.

Overall summary:

  • Choose the Wyndham if walkability to the cruise port, balconies, and included airport shuttle are your top priorities. It’s the easier, more practical option with luggage.
  • Choose the Manchester Grand Hyatt if you want a higher-end stay, better amenities, bayside views, and don’t mind paying the resort fee (or possibly being charged it on a points booking).

1. Wyndham San Diego Bayside – Why choose it

The Wyndham is the most convenient choice for cruise passengers—period. It sits directly across from the main cruise terminal, and you really can walk it in 5 minutes even with suitcases. February weather is usually cool but pleasant, and the sidewalks in this area are wide and easy to roll bags across.

Pros of the Wyndham:

  • Immediate walkability to the port: This is a massive perk on embarkation and disembarkation days, especially with large suitcases.
  • Nearly all rooms have balconies: A lovely perk with the bay right there—sunrise and ship-watching are big highlights.
  • Free airport shuttle: Saves both money and the hassle of ordering an Uber at busy times; the airport is only ~10 minutes away.
  • MCM retro style: If you love that design, this hotel scratches that itch in a way the Hyatt simply does not.
  • Laid-back vibe: Very easy, very no-fuss before/after a cruise.

Cons of the Wyndham:

  • Not a luxury property: Rooms are clean, but decor and finishes are basic compared with the Manchester.
  • li>No hot tub and a small-ish pool area: If you really want a soak pre- or post-cruise, this is a drawback.
  • No free breakfast: As you mentioned—unfortunately true for both hotels.

If “easy” is what you want, the Wyndham wins.

2. Manchester Grand Hyatt – Why choose it

The Manchester is one of San Diego’s flagship hotels—large, impressive, directly on the waterfront, and much closer to upscale dining and shopping. The rooms, amenities, and shared spaces are unquestionably higher-end than the Wyndham.

Pros of the Manchester Grand Hyatt:

  • Luxury-level rooms and amenities: Better design, better beds, better soundproofing, better everything.
  • Hot tub and larger pool areas: This is great for relaxing sore travel muscles.
  • Beautiful views: Bay-facing rooms have fantastic ship and sunset views.
  • Closer to Seaport Village and Gaslamp: More dining and walking options than around the Wyndham.

Cons of the Manchester Grand Hyatt:

  • $42/day resort fee: Hyatt properties often do charge this even on points bookings unless you have status or the credit card benefit that waives it. You would need to check your exact reservation details.
  • Not walkable to the cruise port with big luggage: Technically walkable, yes—but not enjoyable or practical with full cruise bags. An Uber is the way to go.
  • No free airport shuttle: Transportation adds a bit of logistical friction.

If you want comfort, views, and amenities above all else, the Hyatt wins.

3. How to decide — tailored guidance for your trip

Given that you’re staying both before and after a cruise, think about what matters most when:

  • Before the cruise: You generally want convenience, especially if you’re arriving on a flight. Easy transport, easy check-in, and no stress with luggage. → Wyndham is the clear winner here.
  • After the cruise: If you want to relax, soak in a hot tub, or treat yourselves after sailing, the luxury at the Manchester may be worth the Uber ride and the resort fee. → Manchester shines here.

4. Recommendation

Based on your comments—you love balconies, want an easy walk, don’t mind a slightly simpler hotel, and value the airport shuttle—the Wyndham fits your style and needs very well.

But if you’re really tempted by the Manchester’s hot tub, luxury, and bayfront setting, consider doing a split stay: Wyndham before the cruise, Manchester after the cruise when you can fully enjoy the amenities.

5. If choosing only one?

  • If convenience and balconies matter most: Choose the Wyndham.
  • If amenities and overall quality matter most: Choose the Manchester.

Both are good options — it really just depends on which advantages are more important for your style of travel.
