Pismo Beach or Big Sur
Hi - we are a family of 3 (12 y.o. daughter) doing a 2 week PCH drive from San Diego to San Fran in August (via LA, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach and Monterey). Question is we have 2 nights in Pismo and then 2 in Monterey - seems like a long drive in between the two, with lots of places we'll want to stop - would we be better having 1 night in Pismo and one, say, in Big Sur? thanks.
For a family driving the Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to San Francisco, the stretch between Pismo Beach and Monterey is indeed long, with many beautiful stops along the way. Splitting the drive with a night in Big Sur can make the journey more manageable and enjoyable.
Here’s a breakdown of considerations:
- Keeping 2 nights in Pismo Beach: This gives you more time to relax, explore the beach, dunes, and local attractions like the Monarch Butterfly Grove or the Pismo Preserve. However, the drive to Monterey the next day will be long, roughly 4-5 hours without stops, which can be tiring especially with a 12-year-old.
- Option: 1 night in Pismo, 1 night in Big Sur: This allows you to break up the drive, enjoy the scenic Big Sur coastline, and visit iconic stops such as Morro Bay, Ragged Point, McWay Falls, Bixby Bridge, and Pfeiffer Beach. It also gives a more relaxed pace for sightseeing and short hikes.
- Considerations for Big Sur: Accommodations in Big Sur can be limited and more expensive, so booking early is important. Some lodges or inns provide easy access to beaches and trails that are suitable for families.
Suggested approach:
- Day 1: Explore Pismo Beach and nearby attractions, overnight in Pismo.
- Day 2: Depart Pismo, stop at scenic points along the way (Morro Bay, Cambria, Ragged Point), overnight in Big Sur.
- Day 3: Explore Big Sur highlights, then continue to Monterey in the afternoon/evening for your 2-night stay.
This plan balances sightseeing with travel time, allows for shorter drives each day, and maximizes the opportunity to enjoy the iconic Big Sur scenery without feeling rushed.
