Hotel Advice near beach for family within 1 hour of LAX
We are staying a week in CA starting out in LA then to Disneyland for 2 days and would like to end the last 4 days at a coastal hotel near the beach within 1 hour of LAX (we fly out of LAX). My kids are between 10yo and 16yo. This is our first time in CA so we could use all the recommendations you can provide on a nice family hotel (under $500/night) to end our trip at the beaches/pier/etc.
Thank you so much!
For a family-friendly stay near the beach within an hour of LAX, Southern California has several excellent coastal towns with a range of hotel options suitable for kids aged 10–16. Your goal is a comfortable hotel with easy beach access, nearby attractions like piers and shops, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere to end your trip.
Recommended areas and hotels:
- Santa Monica: About 30–40 minutes from LAX, Santa Monica has a vibrant beach, the famous pier, restaurants, shops, and bike paths. Family-friendly hotel options:
- Shore Hotel: Directly across from the beach, modern and eco-friendly, with a pool and walking distance to the pier and Third Street Promenade.
- Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel: Upscale, beachfront, with family-friendly amenities including a pool, kid-friendly dining, and activities.
- Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows: Offers spacious rooms, pool, and easy beach access.
- Manhattan Beach: Around 25–35 minutes from LAX, quieter than Santa Monica, excellent for beach activities and a family-friendly downtown.
- Shade Hotel Manhattan Beach: Modern boutique hotel with rooftop deck, pool, and walking distance to the beach and restaurants.
- Courtyard by Marriott Manhattan Beach: Comfortable and convenient, family-friendly, near beach and pier.
- Hermosa Beach: Next to Manhattan Beach, more casual vibe, ideal for families who enjoy biking or beach volleyball.
- Beach House Hotel Hermosa Beach: Cozy, a short walk to the beach and the pier area with shops and eateries.
- Sonesta Redondo Beach and Marina: Slightly further south but offers pool, beach access, and family-oriented amenities.
- Redondo Beach: Offers a marina, pier, and calm beaches suitable for kids, roughly 30–40 minutes from LAX.
- Portofino Hotel & Marina: Upscale hotel with marina views, pool, and family-friendly amenities.
- Waters Edge Hotel: More budget-friendly, right on the water, convenient for exploring the pier.
Tips for choosing the best spot:
- Santa Monica is more touristy and lively, great if you want lots of dining, shopping, and pier activities. Expect higher prices.
- Manhattan, Hermosa, and Redondo beaches are quieter, more laid-back, easier for families, and still within an hour of LAX.
- Check for hotels with pools and easy beach access—important for kids after several days of theme park activities.
- Consider booking early, especially for summer weeks, to secure rates under $500/night.
- All locations are suitable for a short drive to LAX on your departure day, but traffic can vary, so plan extra travel time.
Summary:
- For an energetic, classic beach experience: Santa Monica (Shore Hotel, Loews Santa Monica).
- For a quieter, relaxed family vibe: Manhattan or Hermosa Beach (Shade Hotel, Beach House Hotel Hermosa Beach).
- For marina views and calm beaches: Redondo Beach (Portofino Hotel & Marina, Waters Edge Hotel).
All these options provide easy beach access, kid-friendly amenities, and are within a manageable drive to LAX, giving you a relaxing coastal end to your California trip.
