24 hours in Dan Francisco - advice needed

Hi I’m landing in San Francisco at 10pm Friday and leaving the next day at 11pm. Looking for advice on where to stay and what to do?

Is like to purchase some souvenirs (like a tshirt, magnets etc for the family) and also see the bridge. I’m fairly fit so happy to walk.

Also I need somewhere to stay where they’ll be happy to look after my luggage.

Thanks in advance

With only about 24 hours in San Francisco, you'll want to maximize your time while keeping things manageable. Since you're arriving late on Friday night, it’s best to stay somewhere central, safe, and convenient for walking or short rides to key spots. Areas like Union Square, Embarcadero, or Fisherman’s Wharf are ideal. Most mid- to upper-range hotels in these areas can accommodate luggage storage if you arrive early or after check-out.

Hotel Recommendations

  • Union Square area: Centrally located, walking distance to shops, restaurants, and public transit. Many hotels here will store luggage even before check-in.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf area: Close to souvenir shops and easy access to the waterfront and Pier 39. Hotels like Holiday Inn Fisherman’s Wharf often allow luggage storage.
  • Embarcadero/Financial District: Convenient for walking along the waterfront toward the Ferry Building, Bay Bridge views, and easy access to public transit.

Evening Arrival

Since you land at 10pm, plan to take a taxi, rideshare, or airport shuttle to your hotel. Depending on your hotel choice, check if there is a 24-hour front desk for smooth late-night check-in.

Saturday Morning & Afternoon

Start early and plan a mix of iconic sights and easy walking. Here’s a suggested plan:

  • Grab breakfast at a nearby café (Union Square or Embarcadero have many options).
  • Head to the Golden Gate Bridge. Walking the bridge or a short hike at Battery Spencer (across the bridge in Marin) gives iconic views and photo opportunities.
  • Return toward the city via Crissy Field or Marina District for scenic waterfront walking and city views.
  • Visit Fisherman’s Wharf/Pier 39 for souvenirs. Shops offer T-shirts, magnets, and other San Francisco memorabilia.
  • If time allows, stroll along the Embarcadero toward the Ferry Building for local foods, artisanal goods, and another chance for souvenirs.

Additional Tips

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; San Francisco hills are steep but manageable if you pace yourself.
  • Use public transit or rideshare to save time between distant locations like the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf.
  • Most hotels will happily store luggage if you arrive early or need to leave it after check-out before your evening departure.
  • For quick meals, Fisherman’s Wharf, Embarcadero, or Union Square offer casual restaurants and cafés.

With this plan, you can see the bridge, enjoy some walking, pick up souvenirs, and make the most of your 24 hours without feeling rushed.
