Rockies to Red Rocks circle trip

I’m going to be in Denver this fall as a first time visitor. After spending time exploring the city, I wanted to take the Rocky Mountaineer to Moab to see some of the parks. My question is what is the best way to get back from Moab (I won’t have a car) to Denver again if I’m not returning on the Rocky Mountaineer. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.

Traveling from Moab back to Denver without a car is doable, though options are more limited than flying or driving yourself. Since the Rocky Mountaineer only runs in certain regions (primarily Canada and parts of the Pacific Northwest), it won’t cover this route, so you’ll need alternative transport. Here are your best options:

  • Flights: The quickest and most convenient way is to fly. Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY) in Moab offers flights to Denver, though often with a connection in Salt Lake City. Airlines like United, Delta, and SkyWest provide service. Flights take about 3–4 hours including layover, compared to a 5–6 hour drive.
  • Shuttle services: There are private shuttle companies that connect Moab to Denver. Companies like Moab Express or All Points Transit can provide rides, but these are often long trips (6–8 hours) and may require advance booking. They are generally more flexible if you don’t want to fly.
  • Bus options: Traditional bus service is limited. Greyhound and some regional carriers connect Moab to Denver, but this can involve multiple transfers and take upwards of 8–10 hours. Not the most comfortable option for a scenic trip, but it’s budget-friendly.

Tips for planning:

  • Book flights or shuttles well in advance, especially in fall, which is popular for outdoor trips.
  • Consider leaving Moab mid-morning or early afternoon to give yourself plenty of travel time to Denver.
  • If you fly, check baggage policies carefully since you may have outdoor gear from your park visits.
  • For shuttle or bus options, verify pick-up and drop-off locations, as some may not be directly in the city center.

Overall, the fastest and least stressful option is a flight back to Denver. Shuttles are a good alternative if you prefer a ground journey with scenic views, while buses are best for travelers prioritizing cost over comfort or speed.
