Question about taking Uber/Lyft to Griffith Observatory

It looks like the Griffith Observatory is fairly close to our hotel - the Loews in Hollywood - and we could almost walk there.

However, my wife has a neuropathy problem that makes it hard for her to walk uphill.

We're planning to go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, and I'm wondering if Uber/Lyft will get us to the entrance of the observatory, so my wife won't have to walk too much uphill?

I also read that there is a shuttle that might take us to the observatory entrance.

The Griffith Observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood, which means that walking from the base or nearby streets involves a noticeable uphill climb. For visitors with mobility issues, such as your wife with neuropathy, there are a few options to minimize walking uphill.

Using ride-share services like Uber or Lyft is a convenient choice. Drivers can usually drop passengers near the observatory's main entrance. The main drop-off point is at the observatory’s upper parking lot, which is right at the entrance plaza, so your wife would not need to walk far uphill. It’s recommended to tell your driver that you’d like to be dropped at the main observatory entrance, not just the general parking area.

In addition to ride-share options, there is a free Griffith Observatory Shuttle that runs from the Griffith Park Greek Theatre parking lot up to the observatory. The shuttle provides an easy ride without walking uphill and is particularly useful if you prefer not to rely on a ride-share vehicle. The shuttle typically operates on weekends and some weekdays, but schedules can vary, so it’s worth checking the official observatory website for exact times on the day of your visit.

  • Option 1: Take an Uber or Lyft directly from Loews Hollywood to the Griffith Observatory entrance plaza. Confirm with the driver the best drop-off point to minimize uphill walking.
  • Option 2: Park at the Griffith Park Greek Theatre lot and take the free Griffith Observatory Shuttle to the observatory entrance. This avoids any uphill walk completely.
  • Option 3: If you enjoy a bit of scenery, there is a moderate walking route from the Fern Dell area of Griffith Park. This involves some uphill walking and may not be suitable for someone with mobility issues.

Other tips:

  • Arrive earlier in the morning on weekdays (Tuesday or Wednesday) to avoid crowds and ensure easier parking or ride-share access.
  • If using Uber/Lyft, check the drop-off route on a map or Google Street View to confirm the driver can reach the upper entrance safely.
  • The observatory itself is wheelchair accessible, with elevators and ramps to view exhibits and telescopes.

Overall, Uber or Lyft is the most flexible and convenient option for your situation, and combined with careful drop-off planning, your wife should be able to enjoy the observatory without significant uphill walking.
