Tips for Valet Parking
Hi All,
I will have to use the Valet Parking at Universal Studios.
I have some questions:
1) I guess I would have to tip the guy when arriving in the morning (drop-off) and also to the guy for retrieval at the end of the day (pick-up) in the evening?
2) How much should I tip for Valet? Is $3 ok or $5 too much?
Thanks in advance.
Hi! Using valet parking at Universal Studios is straightforward, but it’s good to know the etiquette to ensure a smooth experience.
Regarding tipping:
- Yes, it is customary to tip both when you drop off your car and when you pick it up.
- Drop-off: Some guests tip at drop-off, but many choose to tip only at pick-up. Tipping at drop-off can be seen as a pre-tip, which some valets appreciate because it signals good service.
- Pick-up: This is the most important time to tip, as the valet is returning your car safely and efficiently.
- How much to tip:
- $3–$5 is standard per vehicle. For Universal Studios, either amount is perfectly acceptable. $5 is generous and will be appreciated, especially if the lot is busy or if the valet provides extra service (such as retrieving your car quickly, assisting with luggage, or giving directions).
- Many people simply tip $5 at pick-up and nothing at drop-off, which simplifies things and aligns with typical US valet practices.
Additional tips for a smooth valet experience:
- Have your payment and tip ready in cash; most valets do not handle tips via card.
- Keep your keys and parking ticket handy to avoid delays.
- Consider using a tip envelope or placing the cash visibly in your hand so it’s easy for the valet to take without fumbling.
- Be polite and thank the valet — a friendly interaction goes a long way, especially during busy park days.
In summary, you can choose to tip $3–$5 at drop-off or just at pick-up. Many visitors tip only at pick-up and $5 is generous but certainly not excessive. This will ensure a smooth and courteous experience when using valet parking at Universal Studios.
