Visiting China with spouse on F visa

Hello, I'm planning to visit China in October on a F Visa, I'm a UK national.

My spouse may come with me, if that's the case is there any way for an accompanying spouse to travel with me without having to get her own tourist visa?

Thanks for the advice!

The F visa for China is generally issued for short-term non-commercial visits, such as business, study tours, or cultural exchanges. It does not automatically grant entry rights to accompanying family members.

Regarding your spouse accompanying you:

  • Each traveler, including your spouse, usually needs their own valid visa to enter China. China does not typically allow accompanying spouses to enter on your F visa.
  • If your spouse is eligible for a different visa type (for example, a tourist L visa), she would need to apply for that separately before traveling.
  • Some special cases exist for certain work or long-term visas (like Z or X visas), where dependents can apply for accompanying visas (S1/S2 for spouses and children). However, this does not apply for short-term F visas.

Practical steps to follow:

  • Check with the Chinese consulate or embassy in the UK to confirm the exact visa requirements for your spouse based on your F visa and planned duration of stay.
  • Apply for the appropriate visa for your spouse in advance to avoid any complications at the border.
  • Prepare supporting documents for both of you, such as your F visa approval notice, hotel bookings, and itinerary, as these may be requested during the visa application process.

In summary, your spouse cannot typically enter China on your F visa. She will need to obtain her own visa, most likely an L (tourist) visa, for the visit. Planning ahead and confirming requirements with the embassy will ensure a smooth entry for both of you.
