4hrs in Beijing

We check out of our hotel at 12pm and our flight is 8pm, so thinking we need to leave for the airport at 5pm. Looking for recommendations on what to do, I heard there are day spa places which we could potentially leave from there to the airport. Otherwise we could keep sightseeing on our own but are there showers at the Beijing Capital Airport as we have long flights back to Sydney Australia? Thank you

With roughly 4 hours between checking out at 12pm and leaving for the airport at 5pm, you have limited time in Beijing. Here’s how you can make the most of it:

Option 1: Relaxation and Spa

If you prefer a stress-free end to your trip, visiting a day spa is a convenient option. Some spas near central Beijing offer treatments including massages, facials, and even shower facilities. You can plan to leave directly from the spa to the airport.

  • Consider a spa in Chaoyang or near Wangfujing for central access.
  • Check if they offer short-stay packages or shower facilities, as this can save time and give you a refreshed start to your long flight.
  • Allow at least 2–3 hours for the spa visit to comfortably enjoy a treatment and get ready for departure.

Option 2: Quick Sightseeing

If you’d rather do a little sightseeing, focus on attractions near your hotel to minimize travel time:

  • Visit the Forbidden City or Tiananmen Square, but keep in mind that visiting inside the Forbidden City can take 2–3 hours alone.
  • Walk around Wangfujing Street for a quick cultural experience and local snacks.
  • Remember to allow travel time back to the airport (about 1 hour by taxi from city center to Beijing Capital Airport, longer during peak traffic).

Airport Shower Facilities

  • Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) terminals have shower facilities. Terminal 3 is particularly well-equipped, with pay-per-use showers available after security.
  • Showers are available in airline lounges too. If you have lounge access, this can be more comfortable and convenient.
  • Plan to arrive at the airport at least 2–3 hours before your international flight, and allocate 20–30 minutes for the shower if needed.

In summary, for a 4-hour window, either a spa visit or a quick walk around nearby attractions is feasible. If you prefer minimal stress, the spa route plus airport shower is likely the most comfortable option for a long-haul flight to Sydney.
