My family and I will be in SD for 4 days. It’s 4 of us. I want to be close to the beach but also what to be near shops and restaurants. If not very close to the beach at least a resort where we can relax by a beautiful pool. Would like to visit the zoo, Old Town and Balboa Park as well.
Didn’t plan on renting a car. But think maybe we should to get around better. Thoughts on a car? Could do a hotel for $350-$400/night. Thank you.
For a first-time visit to San Diego with a family of four, looking to combine beach access, restaurants, shopping, and some sightseeing, there are a few strategic areas and hotel options that could work well within your budget of $350-$400/night.
Since you want to be near the beach and also have easy access to restaurants and shops, staying in areas like La Jolla, Pacific Beach, or Mission Beach would be ideal. These neighborhoods offer a mix of beach access, casual dining, and a relaxed resort vibe. However, note that some of these areas may have limited direct public transit to places like Balboa Park or the San Diego Zoo.
Regarding a car: While San Diego does have public transit options like buses and trolleys, having a rental car will give you much more flexibility, especially to reach Balboa Park, the Zoo, and Old Town conveniently. If you prefer not to rent a car, staying near a beach with good restaurants and easy transit to downtown is key, but travel to attractions may take longer.
If you choose to rent a car, it will make visits to Balboa Park, the Zoo, and Old Town much easier and faster, and you'll be less dependent on rideshares. Parking is generally available at these attractions, though some areas like Balboa Park may have limited free parking near popular spots.
For a 4-day stay, you could structure your itinerary as follows:
Overall, booking a hotel with a pool and beach access in La Jolla, Pacific Beach, or Mission Bay gives the family a good mix of relaxation, scenic views, and proximity to restaurants, while renting a car ensures maximum flexibility for sightseeing.
