Tippin g in China

I would like to know if it is customary to tip a tour guide in China?

Tour has been paid for a Tour in Zhangjiajie National Park, so I would like to know if it is ok to tip the guide or no?

Just trying to be respectful to the culture.

Few years ago I remember tipping in China's restaurants was not expected and I was told it was considered offensive, but I never took a tour then but do all activities independetnly.

Thanks !

Tipping in China has historically not been part of the culture and was often seen as unnecessary or even slightly offensive in restaurants and casual settings. However, with the growth of international tourism, tipping practices have changed somewhat, particularly for private tour guides, drivers, and hotel staff who interact with foreign visitors.

Regarding your tour in Zhangjiajie National Park:

  • Private Tour Guides: It is generally considered acceptable and appreciated to tip a private guide if they provided excellent service. The amount is discretionary, but around 50-100 CNY per day per person is common for good service.
  • Drivers: If a driver is included in your tour, a small tip (20-50 CNY per day) is also appreciated.
  • Group Tours: For larger group tours, tipping is less expected but still appreciated if the guide went above and beyond to help or provide personalized attention.

Practical tips for tipping in China:

  • Hand the tip directly to the guide in cash at the end of the tour. Some guides may accept foreign currency (USD/EUR), but CNY is preferred.
  • Always present it politely, as a gesture of gratitude rather than an obligation.
  • Do not tip in restaurants unless it is explicitly requested; tipping there is still unusual in most local eateries.

In summary, tipping a tour guide in Zhangjiajie is culturally acceptable and seen as a kind gesture, especially for private tours or exceptional service. Just be discreet and polite when offering it.
