Monday after Elk Fest weekend

We have been to Estes many times. Last year we were there beginning October 15 and it was busy but not terrible, weather was fine. Luckily there were Elk still in town. But we are hoping not to wait that long to go this year.

So here's my question...

We will be staying with a friend in Estes Park and will ask our friend, but I am also double checking here on this forum as to whether the crowds from Elk Fest generally clear out on the Monday right after? Or do a lot of people stay for the following week?

Thanks!

Elk Fest in Estes Park is a popular annual event that draws many visitors for the elk rut and related festivities. The weekend itself is typically the busiest period, with heavy foot and vehicle traffic, crowded restaurants, and full parking lots at key elk viewing spots.

Regarding the Monday immediately following Elk Fest:

  • The majority of visitors tend to leave after the festival ends on Sunday, so traffic and crowds decrease significantly on Monday.
  • Some tourists and locals may extend their stay for an extra day or two, especially if they are combining it with fall foliage sightseeing, but these numbers are far lower than during the festival weekend.
  • Elk viewing remains possible, as the rut continues for a few weeks, but the experience is generally quieter and more relaxed on Monday compared to the festival weekend.

Other considerations:

  • Restaurants and shops may still have some residual crowds, especially for lunch and dinner, but waits are usually shorter.
  • Parking at popular elk viewing areas like the Moraine Park or Estes Park downtown areas should be much easier, though arriving early is still recommended.
  • The weather in mid-October can be variable, but if it’s similar to previous years, you can expect crisp days with fewer people than the weekend.

In summary, if you’re hoping for a quieter experience while still enjoying elk and fall scenery, visiting on the Monday after Elk Fest is a good choice. Crowds will have thinned considerably, making it easier to explore Estes Park and nearby trails without the hustle and bustle of the festival weekend.
