Things to Do - Teen Boy

Hello,

Will be in Atlanta for Braves & Falcons. Staying 2 nights at Sheraton Suites Galleria across from Cumberland Mall and near Truist Park. I am more looking for things to do on Saturday during the day prior to the evening Braves game.

Besides the mall, is there anything nearby that would be fun to do/see for a teen that is easy to get to without a car? I saw Stone Mountain Park but it's a 35 Min Uber each way. Worth it? That's a little farther than we'd like to go. Interests are sports, architecture/tall buildings, rides/theme parks, food/sweets/desserts, maybe something historical if it's easy/fast moving.

We will be downtown prior to the Falcons game on Sunday and plan to do the SkyView Ferris Wheel (my son loves to see the views of cities) and stop at Bottle Cap Cafe at World of Coca Cola. Welcome any other easy/quick ideas as we won't have much time. Loves to see interesting buildings, sweet treats, sports themed stores or venues, interesting parks.

Thank you!

It sounds like you and your teen are going to have an exciting weekend in Atlanta! With your interest in sports, architecture, sweets, and quick, fun activities, there are plenty of great things to do around the Cumberland area and downtown without needing a car. Here’s a mix of suggestions that are either within walking distance or an easy short ride from your hotel:

Nearby Attractions (Saturday before the Braves game):

  • Truist Park Tour – Since you’re staying across from Truist Park, why not take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Braves’ home stadium? The tour is usually about an hour long and offers a great way to get up close to one of Major League Baseball’s top stadiums, including areas like the locker rooms, press box, and more. This could be a fun way for your teen to experience the stadium before the game that evening.
  • Cumberland Mall – While you mentioned the mall already, it’s worth noting that there are some cool stores and food options in Cumberland Mall itself, including a good selection of sweet treat spots like a cookie shop, ice cream, and a candy store. If your son loves sports, check out the nearby sports apparel stores for some gear. It's an easy option to kill some time and stay close to the hotel.
  • The Battery Atlanta – Just outside Truist Park, The Battery Atlanta is a shopping, dining, and entertainment district. It's a fun place to explore, especially for your son if he's into sports or cool hangouts. There are also places to grab a sweet treat, like Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. The area has some interesting architecture and lots of things to do, including bowling or arcade games at The Punch Bowl Social.
  • Atlanta History Center (with the Swan House) – If you’re willing to take a short ride (around 10 minutes from your hotel), the Atlanta History Center offers a great mix of history and architecture. The Swan House is especially cool for architecture lovers, and there are interactive exhibits that might appeal to your teen. It’s not too far out, and the experience is engaging and easy to walk through.

Stone Mountain Park: Worth the Distance?

Stone Mountain is a beautiful park with plenty of outdoor activities, and while it’s about a 35-minute Uber ride from your hotel, it might be a little farther than you want to go considering your time. That said, if your son enjoys outdoor activities and scenic views, Stone Mountain offers the famous Skyride cable car up the mountain, which provides stunning panoramic views of the city. There’s also a laser show in the evenings, but it’s a bit far for just a day trip if you’re pressed for time.

Downtown (Sunday before the Falcons game):

  • SkyView Atlanta – You’ve already mentioned the SkyView Ferris Wheel, and it’s an excellent choice for sweeping views of the city. Located in Centennial Olympic Park, it’s a great way to get an aerial view of downtown. You’ll also be close to other attractions if you want to add more to your day.
  • Bottle Cap Cafe at World of Coca-Cola – Another great stop, especially for a teen who loves unique venues! The World of Coca-Cola offers a fun experience with interactive exhibits about the brand’s history. The Bottle Cap Cafe is a nice spot to grab a drink and enjoy the quirky, themed atmosphere.
  • Centennial Olympic Park – After SkyView, you can stroll through Centennial Olympic Park, which has fountains, a reflecting pool, and open space. It's a cool spot to relax and take in the views of the city. It's also right next to the College Football Hall of Fame if your son is a football fan.
  • College Football Hall of Fame – If your teen loves sports, especially football, the College Football Hall of Fame is a must-visit. It’s an interactive experience, with exhibits covering college football history, memorabilia, and even a chance to try out some football skills in the Fan Experience area.
  • The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site – If you're looking for something historical that’s easy to explore, the MLK Jr. site is a good option. It includes the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the King Center, and the historic house where he was born. It’s informative, quick-moving, and offers an enriching look into Atlanta’s rich history in civil rights.

Additional Quick Stops for Sweet Treats and Fun:

  • Sweet Auburn Curb Market – If you're in the mood for some delicious local food and sweet treats, the Sweet Auburn Curb Market is a great spot to check out. Located near the MLK Jr. historic site, it has a variety of local vendors selling everything from pastries to southern sweets.
  • Ice Cream at The Creamery – Located near Piedmont Park, The Creamery is a cool spot for gourmet ice cream. It’s a great place for your son to enjoy a sweet treat in a relaxing setting.

These are all great options that will keep your son entertained without requiring too much travel time. Whether it’s visiting sports venues, enjoying stunning views, or grabbing some delicious desserts, Atlanta has plenty to offer! Enjoy your time in the city, and have a great weekend at the games!
