We (4 adults) will be in Atlanta 2/9-2/11 for a wedding, staying near the Fox Theater. We have tickets to World of Coke for Friday afternoon. I read great things about the Atlanta Botanical Garden, but is it worth going now? I'm not sure how much will be in bloom. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library was also recommended. Anything else a "must see?" We will have free time Saturday until 2:00 and Sunday until 1:00.
We won't have a car and will rely on public transportation or Uber.
Thank you!
It sounds like you have an exciting weekend ahead in Atlanta, and you've already planned some great activities! The Atlanta Botanical Garden is indeed a beautiful destination, though the time of year will impact what you'll be able to see in bloom. Here's some information to help you decide whether it's worth a visit during your trip and other recommendations for must-see spots in Atlanta:
Atlanta Botanical Garden:
The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a stunning place year-round, but in early February, it may not have the vibrant blooms you'd typically associate with the garden, which peaks in the spring and summer. However, there are still some attractions you can enjoy:
While the outdoor gardens won’t be at their most colorful in February, the indoor areas and displays can still provide a lovely experience. If you're interested in nature and beautiful indoor gardens, the Botanical Garden is worth considering, especially if you're looking for a peaceful break from the city.
Jimmy Carter Presidential Library:
The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum is a fantastic option to explore on your trip, especially if you're interested in history and politics. It's located in a lovely area near Piedmont Park, and the exhibits provide an in-depth look at President Carter’s life, his presidency, and his post-presidency humanitarian work. It's a good choice for a cultural and educational experience during your free time.
Must-See Attractions and Activities for Your Free Time:
In addition to the Botanical Garden and the Jimmy Carter Library, here are a few other must-see spots in Atlanta that you can easily visit during your free time, especially considering you won't have a car:
Public Transportation and Getting Around:
Since you won’t have a car, Uber and public transportation (MARTA) are great options for getting around the city. MARTA has a station near the Fox Theatre (Peachtree Center station), so it's easy to hop on and head to places like the Georgia Aquarium, Piedmont Park, or the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site. For destinations that are farther away or more specific, Uber is your best bet. Atlanta’s downtown area is relatively compact, so getting around should be relatively simple.
Conclusion:
The Atlanta Botanical Garden can still be worth a visit, even in February, especially if you're interested in indoor gardens and seasonal displays. However, if you're hoping to see vibrant blooms, it may not be the best time for that. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library is another great option, especially if you're a history enthusiast. For your free time, I’d also recommend checking out the Georgia Aquarium, Piedmont Park, or the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site—all of which are accessible without a car and offer unique experiences that capture the essence of Atlanta. Enjoy your trip to this vibrant city!
