Ideas for early morning activities for kids
Last year we came for a visit and since live in Central time, we were waking up so early and I couldn’t find much to do before 10am. We will be staying in Glendale/ Pasadena area but I’m willing to drive a bit for something that’s worth it.
Los Angeles can be a little quiet early in the morning, especially for kids, but there are still plenty of fun options that start before 10am or are great for early risers. Staying in Glendale/Pasadena gives you access to both local and slightly farther attractions within a reasonable drive.
Here are some ideas for early morning activities for kids:
- Griffith Park & Griffith Observatory Grounds: While the observatory itself opens later, the park trails and outdoor areas are open early. You can take a short hike or walk with kids, enjoy views of the city, and even catch the sunrise. The park has pony rides that start early in the morning.
- Huntington Library, Art Museum & Botanical Gardens: Opens around 10am, but the botanical gardens are often accessible slightly earlier depending on the season. Kids enjoy the garden spaces and the maze in the Huntington gardens is fun for early visitors.
- Los Angeles Zoo (inside Griffith Park): Opens at 10am, but arriving right at opening lets you beat crowds and enjoy cooler morning temperatures. Young kids love the animals and the zoo is manageable in size for a morning visit.
- Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard and Local Parks: Some parks like Central Park or Brookside Park open early and are perfect for playground time. You can combine this with grabbing breakfast at local bakeries that open early, like Cream or Le Pain Quotidien.
- Glendale/ Burbank Local Breakfast Spots: Many local cafes open early (6:30–7:00am), so you can grab breakfast and then visit nearby parks or hiking trails. Examples include Porto’s Bakery in Burbank or The Americana’s walking paths.
If you are willing to drive a bit further, you can reach the beach areas like Santa Monica or Venice Beach early for a sunrise walk along the sand and piers, which is always magical for kids and adults alike.
- Santa Monica Pier & Beach: Free to walk along and watch the morning waves. Less crowded early in the day and some arcade attractions may open around 10am.
- Venice Canals Walk: Quiet, peaceful, and stroller/kid-friendly. You can combine with breakfast nearby.
- El Matador Beach in Malibu: Early morning hikes down to the beach are doable and beautiful. Perfect if your kids are adventurous and enjoy short hikes to explore tide pools.
Tips: Bringing snacks, water, and dressing in layers is helpful for cooler mornings. Early mornings are also a great time to avoid traffic, so you can see more and enjoy calmer spaces before LA fully wakes up.
