Government shutdown

Probably a dumb question but if the Feds shut down I'm assuming the park will be closed off this weekend?

If there is a federal government shutdown, National Parks like Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) are generally affected, but the specifics depend on the level of staffing and the type of closure.

Here’s what typically happens:

  • Entrance gates may remain open, but staffed visitor centers, restrooms, and campgrounds are often closed.
  • Rangers may not be available for services, permits, or emergency assistance beyond what is absolutely required for safety.
  • Some roads and trails may still be physically accessible, but without staff oversight, there could be limited or no maintenance, signage, or trash services.
  • Park websites and official information may not be updated frequently during a shutdown, so real-time conditions could be uncertain.

For weekend visitors during a shutdown:

  • You can sometimes enter the park, hike, and drive through scenic areas, but facilities such as restrooms, visitor centers, and lodges might be closed.
  • It’s important to plan for limited services, bring extra food, water, and be prepared for emergencies on your own.
  • Check local news or the National Park Service social media feeds for any last-minute updates about closures or access restrictions.

In short, the park is usually not completely locked down, but your experience will be significantly limited, and safety precautions are crucial. If having full access to facilities and staffed areas is important for your trip, you might consider postponing until after the shutdown is resolved.
