Missed timed Entry

I am planning a trip the first week in September to CO. The first 2 nights i have set in Co Springs and have my itinerary fairly set. I'm overwhelmed with where to go next and what else to do. I thought Glenwood Springs would be fun but nixed that idea because i also wanted to go the Estes & RMNP and not spread our time traveling from place to place, We also want to visit with friends for 2 or 2 nights in Golden The next logical question is WHAT do we want to do!? I DONT KNOW! we're in our low 60's and in fairly decent shape. Biking a trail, or short hikes would be nice. I don't know if it's too cool for rafting or water activities. I missed the opportunity for times entry in the earlier hours and can only get 2pm. HELP! thanks in advance.

Visiting Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in early September is a wonderful idea—crowds are a bit lighter than peak summer, and the weather is generally pleasant, though mornings and evenings can be cool. Since you only have a 2pm timed entry, there are still plenty of options to make the day enjoyable without feeling rushed.

Hiking & Scenic Walks

  • Bear Lake Trail: A short, easy loop around Bear Lake (0.6 miles) with stunning views of surrounding peaks—perfect if you’re starting in the afternoon.
  • Alberta Falls: A 1.6-mile round-trip hike that’s moderate and leads to a beautiful waterfall.
  • Sprague Lake: Very easy, flat 0.5-mile loop ideal for a relaxing walk and photography.
  • Emerald Lake: A bit longer (3.5 miles round-trip), but manageable for someone in decent shape, with a spectacular alpine lake at the end.

Scenic Drives

  • Trail Ridge Road: Even if you start later in the day, driving the main park road gives panoramic views. Aim to do the highest points first in case the light fades.
  • Old Fall River Road: A one-way, slower, historic gravel route—great if you enjoy a peaceful drive and viewpoints without the effort of hiking.

Biking Options

  • Bear Lake Road and Glacier Gorge Road are accessible for road or hybrid bikes and provide gentle grades. Afternoon timing should be fine, but watch for wildlife and other hikers.
  • If you’d like a longer ride, consider renting e-bikes in Estes Park; this allows you to cover more distance without overexertion.

Other Activities

  • Visit Estes Park for a leisurely stroll, local shops, or a scenic overlook like Lake Estes.
  • Photography stops: Look for spots along the road such as Many Parks Curve and Forest Canyon Overlook for iconic RMNP shots.
  • Rafting/water activities: By early September, water is usually cooler, so rafting may be brisk but possible—consider milder stretches on the Big Thompson River near Estes Park if you’re interested.

Since your plan includes a stay in Golden for 2 nights with friends, you could make a relaxed drive from Estes Park in the afternoon, stop at scenic overlooks along US-36, and spend the evening in town. That way, your trip balances active outdoor exploration with social downtime without feeling rushed.
