Visiting same time as 49er’s

Hi, we’re visiting Death Valley for the first time this year and I’ve just discovered we’re staying in Stovepipe Wells at the same time as the 49er’s encampment is taking place there. I think I read that it brings thousands of people, so just wanting to be prepared. Do they usually all visit the main sights too? Do I need to make advance reservations for food places (not sure if you can do that)? Might we be stargazing at night to the sounds of western music (I don’t mind that!) - thanks

Visiting Death Valley during the 49er’s Encampment at Stovepipe Wells is a unique experience, and it’s good to be prepared. The event draws a sizable crowd, often several thousand people, who camp, participate in activities, and sometimes explore the surrounding area.

Regarding how this might affect your visit:

  • Main sights: Many attendees of the 49er’s Encampment stay around Stovepipe Wells and participate in the event activities. Some do venture out to popular sights like Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Zabriskie Point, and other nearby landmarks, but not all do. Expect a few more visitors than usual at nearby attractions, but the park is large, so you can still find quieter spots if you start early.
  • Food and dining: The restaurants at Stovepipe Wells, including the general store and dining options, can be busier than normal. Advance reservations are generally not possible for the small dining facilities in the park, so plan to eat earlier or later than typical meal times to avoid long waits. Bringing snacks or picnic items can help you avoid peak crowd times.
  • Stargazing and evening ambiance: Death Valley is known for its dark skies, and you may indeed hear music from the encampment if you are nearby. The event often has western-style music and activities that can add a festive backdrop to your stargazing experience. If you prefer complete solitude, you can drive a short distance away from Stovepipe Wells to enjoy quieter, dark-sky areas.

Additional tips to make your visit smoother:

  • Arrive at popular sights early in the morning to avoid crowds and high daytime heat.
  • Check the schedule of the 49er’s Encampment if available; some activities may spill onto nearby trails or picnic areas.
  • Plan extra time for travel within the park, as the roads around Stovepipe Wells may have more traffic than usual during the encampment.
  • Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and hats, as even during fall the desert can be very hot during the day.

Overall, staying during the 49er’s Encampment can be a fun and lively experience. Expect some additional visitors, plan your meals strategically, and you’ll still be able to enjoy the incredible landscapes and stargazing that Death Valley offers.
