Are Wupatki and Sunset Crater currently open?
We're hoping to drive through both Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments next week on our drive from the Grand Canyon to Winslow. Any updates on closures?
I just read that Petrified Forest NP entrances are closed. Thanks.
Good question. Yes — as of the latest information, both Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument are open for visitors, though some visitor center and facility services may be limited.
Here’s a breakdown of their current status:
- Wupatki National Monument
- The park road is open 24/7 year-round, and trails and pueblo ruins are open from sunrise to sunset.
- The Wupatki Visitor Center is operating, typically from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
- There are no current broad closures listed; check the NPS “Alerts & Conditions” page for your exact travel dates in case of temporary conditions.
- Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
- The scenic loop road through Sunset Crater is open.
- The Sunset Crater Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Note: Some trails may close during snow cover for safety, according to the NPS compendium.
Important Considerations:
- Even though the monuments are open, some amenities (restrooms, staffing) may be limited, especially during a federal shutdown.
- The Loop Road (Forest Road 545) connecting Wupatki and Sunset Crater is a maintained paved road; visitors should use it rather than trying off-road.
- Backcountry and archaeological sites outside of developed trails are generally restricted to regulated access.
Bottom line: Yes — you should be able to drive through both Wupatki and Sunset Crater Monuments next week. The loop road is open, and key trails and viewpoints are accessible. Just be prepared for limited visitor center services and check for any last-minute alerts on the NPS site before your trip.
