Currency exchange in Tung Chung

I will be staying in Tung Chung for 2 nights to visit Lantau island and Disneyland and then will head towards HK Island. How card friendly is HK today (Lantau island especially) and I wanted to know if there are any currency exchange centres with good rates around. I would like to skip those at the airport. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

Hong Kong is generally very card-friendly, including for credit and debit cards, but Lantau Island has some limitations depending on where you go. Disneyland, Ngong Ping 360, and most hotels accept cards without issues. Smaller shops, local eateries, or markets on Lantau may still prefer cash, so it’s useful to carry some HKD.

Octopus cards are highly convenient for transport on Lantau Island, including the MTR, buses, and even some retail outlets and restaurants. You can top up the Octopus card at MTR stations, convenience stores, and some hotel receptions.

For currency exchange in Tung Chung (outside of the airport), options are limited but there are a few alternatives with reasonable rates:

  • Tung Chung MTR Station area: Some small exchange kiosks near the station or in Citygate Outlets mall. Rates are generally better than the airport but may be slightly higher than downtown Hong Kong.
  • Citygate Outlets: Some banks and exchange counters operate here and often have competitive rates. Look for Hang Seng Bank or Bank of China counters.
  • Hotels in Tung Chung: Some larger hotels offer currency exchange for guests, usually at fair rates.

If you plan to head to HK Island later, you’ll find more options and better rates in central areas such as Central, Causeway Bay, and Tsim Sha Tsui. Banks like HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China, as well as licensed money changers in shopping districts, generally offer competitive rates.

Summary tips:

  • Carry some cash for small vendors or markets on Lantau.
  • Use Octopus card for convenient transport and small payments.
  • Consider exchanging larger amounts at Citygate Outlets or on HK Island for better rates than airport kiosks.

Overall, Tung Chung is manageable for card payments and limited cash exchange, but better rates and options exist once you move closer to central Hong Kong.
