Which district to stay

Hi

We are staying in Hong Kong for 2 nights before moving to our next destination. (Arriving/departing by air). Any recommendations on the best district to stay that’s not too far from airport but will allow us to do some general sightseeing activities?

Any advice gratefully received

For a short 2-night stay in Hong Kong where you want to be not-too-far from the airport but still able to do good sightseeing, the main trade-off is: pick somewhere on Kowloon (closer to Airport Express’ Kowloon stop and great harbour views) for convenience + sightseeing, or Hong Kong Island (Central / Causeway Bay) for classic city sights but slightly further transfer time to the airport. Tung Chung (Lantau) is the closest to the airport but has fewer sightseeing options beyond the outlet mall and cable car/Big Buddha area.

Quick facts about the Airport Express (useful for transit decisions): the Airport Express runs between Airport → Tsing Yi → Kowloon → Hong Kong and is the fastest public option into the city (journey to Kowloon or Hong Kong station is under ~25 minutes). The official MTR fare to Kowloon Station is around HKD105 (single journey adult).

Practical district recommendations (each includes why you’d choose it and the trade-offs):

  • Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) — my top pick for 2 nights

Why: excellent harbourfront views (Victoria Harbour), museums (Hong Kong Museum of History, space to stroll along the promenade), huge range of hotels, restaurants and shopping, and very walkable for classic Hong Kong sightseeing. It’s convenient from the Airport Express — Kowloon Station (+ short taxi/MTR ride) or a taxi from the airport.

Who it’s for: travelers who want iconic harbour views, easy evening walks, and lots of dining/nightlife within walking distance.

  • Mong Kok / Jordan

Why: best for street markets (Ladies’ Market, Temple Street at night), local food and a buzzy, energetic neighbourhood. Generally cheaper rooms than TST and very convenient for MTR access to other neighbourhoods.

Who it’s for: travelers who want lively street markets, food stalls and bargain shopping. It’s slightly more local and less scenic than TST but very central for exploring Kowloon.

  • Central / Sheung Wan / Causeway Bay (Hong Kong Island)

Why: classic Hong Kong skyline area, great restaurants, Star Ferry to Kowloon, The Peak, and top-end shopping in Causeway Bay. Feels more “city” and offers quick access to many attractions.

Trade-off: slightly longer transfers from the airport compared with Kowloon side (though still easy via Airport Express to Hong Kong Station or by taxi/MTR). Good if you prefer Hong Kong Island vibes and want to be close to the Star Ferry and Peak Tram.

  • Tung Chung / Lantau

Why: closest to the airport (short drive), convenient if you have an early flight or heavy luggage, and home to Citygate Outlets and Ngong Ping 360. Not ideal if your goal is central city sightseeing at night.

Who it’s for: travelers wanting minimum travel time to the airport or planning to visit Lantau’s attractions.

Taxi vs Airport Express — which to use?

  • Airport Express + short taxi/MTR: fastest and most reliable in peak traffic; AE single fares are published by MTR (e.g. Kowloon Station ~ HKD105). Trains run frequently and avoid traffic delays.
  • Direct taxi: door-to-door and easier with lots of luggage — especially late at night or when you land very late. Typical taxi fares from the airport to central Kowloon/City areas vary (many sources estimate roughly HKD ~260–350 depending on destination and surcharges). Expect the taxi ride to take ~30–45 minutes depending on traffic.

Extra practical tips

  • If you want minimal transit time and great evening views/activities, pick Tsim Sha Tsui — it’s a short taxi/MTR hop from the Airport Express’ Kowloon stop and puts you right on the harbour promenade for evening skyline views.
  • If you want cheaper rooms and local street life, Mong Kok is ideal — quick to reach by a short MTR ride from Kowloon or a brief taxi.
  • Buy an Octopus card on arrival — it works on MTR, buses, trams and many shops and saves time vs. single tickets.
  • Check Airport Express first/last trains if you’re arriving or leaving late — trains are frequent but there are final services around midnight/shortly after (times vary by day). If you arrive after the last AE, taxis are the fallback.
  • If you want to combine cost and convenience, one good approach is: Airport Express to Kowloon Station → short taxi or MTR into TST/Mong Kok; on departure day either AE direct from Hong Kong/Kowloon Station or a taxi if you have lots of luggage and time is tight.

Bottom line: for two nights with sightseeing and a desire to be reasonably close to the airport, Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) is the best-balanced choice (great harbour views, museums, dining, and easy links to the Airport Express via Kowloon Station). If you prefer a more local market experience and lower hotel rates, pick Mong Kok. For ultimate proximity to the airport (but fewer evening sightseeing options), choose Tung Chung.
