Visiting Main Attractions Near Christmas

Hi all, my husband and I are planning an 8-10 day trip to San Diego starting around December 14th. We've been to San Diego on vacation twice this year, and typically split our time between Mission Bay/La Jolla and Oceanside. While we've spent a fair bit of time in San Diego at this point, we have not yet done the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, or SeaWorld San Diego.

The Zoo and Safari Park are something we've been wanting to do for awhile and wanted to make a highlight of this particular trip. We hadn't initially considered SeaWorld, but we saw a deal that included tickets to there and we did actually really enjoy SeaWorld when we lived in Florida, so we would be game for adding it.

The deal I saw is the "San Diego 3-for-1" available on SeaWorld's website as part of their Black Friday Presale that includes tickets to all 3 for $172 ($344 for both of us). It looks like it's only available for purchase through 11/9 and must be used before the end of the year. By my math, it looks like that's a savings of $107 each or like adding SeaWorld for just $20 per person.

We had initially thought about buying a San Diego Zoo annual pass with some guest passes because we thought as often as we ended up going to San Diego this year, that it was relatively likely we would go once or more within the next year. Looking at the options, I think I'd probably do the Wildlife Protector Level that would cover my admission for both, plus a guest pass for my husband, then buy him a single ticket at 50% for one coming to a total $187. The obvious benefit being I could still go as often as I wanted within the next year. (And I need to think about if the next two categories, Wildlife Protector Premium Wildlife Guardian would make even more sense).

As I'm typing all of this out, I think I'm starting to lean towards the Zoo annual passes, but I'm curious what everyone else suggests or if there's going to be any more Black Friday deals or other specials I should be aware of. We're trying to decide what attractions we're going to now because that's going to somewhat drive how many nights we stay in what areas.

For an 8-10 day San Diego trip around mid-December, focusing on the main attractions like the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld, it’s important to consider both cost savings and flexibility, especially since you’ve already spent significant time in the area this year.

Based on the details you provided, here’s a breakdown of your options:

  • San Diego 3-for-1 Deal: This deal includes tickets to the Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld for $172 per person and must be used before the end of the year. The deal is an excellent value if your priority is experiencing all three attractions during this trip, as it adds SeaWorld for a very small incremental cost.
  • San Diego Zoo Annual Pass (Wildlife Protector Level): This option provides unlimited access to the Zoo for the year plus guest passes for your husband. With the half-price single ticket for him, your total comes to $187. The benefit here is long-term flexibility—you can return to the Zoo multiple times over the next year without additional cost.
  • Higher Tier Annual Passes: Wildlife Protector Premium or Wildlife Guardian levels may make sense if you anticipate visiting multiple times with other guests or want additional perks (like parking, discounts at other attractions, or early entry). Evaluate whether the extra benefits justify the higher cost.

Considerations for your planning:

  • Timing: Since you’ll be visiting near Christmas, crowds at the Zoo and SeaWorld will likely be higher, so planning early morning visits or weekday visits where possible can help avoid the busiest times.
  • Combination Strategy: If your goal is to see all three attractions during this trip, the 3-for-1 deal is almost certainly the cheapest and simplest for this visit. If you anticipate returning to San Diego within the next 12 months and want repeat access to the Zoo, the annual pass might be a better long-term value.
  • Black Friday Deals: Keep an eye on SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, and Safari Park websites; the 3-for-1 deal is likely the best early-bird presale, but sometimes additional flash deals or package upgrades appear around Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Check for any bundled hotel + tickets offers if your travel dates are flexible.

In terms of logistics for your trip:

  • Consider basing your stay near Balboa Park or Mission Bay for central access to the Zoo, SeaWorld, and other attractions.
  • If visiting both the Zoo and Safari Park, note that the Safari Park is about 30-40 minutes north of the Zoo, so plan for a half-day at each location.
  • SeaWorld can be fit into a full day on its own, but since you’re familiar with similar attractions in Florida, you might prioritize shows and rides you enjoyed previously.

Recommendation: For a one-time trip focused on all three attractions, the 3-for-1 deal is the most cost-effective. If repeat visits to the Zoo over the next year are likely, then the Wildlife Protector Annual Pass plus a single discounted ticket for your husband is a strong choice, even if slightly higher in cost upfront.

Finally, plan your accommodation according to which attractions you prioritize most each day to minimize driving during peak traffic and maximize your enjoyment.
