"Tan Kuai Salak" has its roots in the Salak Phat merit-making ceremony, a tradition in which Buddhists offer food and other offerings to monks through a lottery.

The word "Tan" in Northern Thai means offering alms, while "Kuay" is a container similar to a basket or basket used to hold offerings for monks.
