Located in Arashiyama area
in the western part of Kyoto city
It is a Rinzai sect Zen Buddhist temple
It was built in 1339 by Shogun Ashikaga Takauji
in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo
with Muso Soseki
as the founding abbot
The building of Tenryuji Temple was damaged
by fire several times and was rebuilt
in the Meiji era (1868-1912)
Except for the Zen garden which was not damaged
and has remained in its original form to the present
This garden was designed by Muso Soseki who was the first abbot of the temple
