Hokoku Shrine is located in Chausuyama-cho, Tennoji Ward, Osaka City. It is said to have been established when Prince Shotoku built Shitennoji Temple, dedicating the shrine to Emperor Sujun (Prince Shotoku's uncle).
As one of the seven auxiliary shrines of Shitennoji Temple, Hokoku Shrine is situated in the southwest direction, which corresponds to the temple's rear demon gate. Historically, until the mid-Meiji period, there was a beautiful moat along the southern edge of the shrine grounds. Worshippers crossed this moat to visit the shrine, which is believed to be the origin of the name "Hokoku" (meaning "crossing the moat").
The shrine grounds feature a sacred tree over 550 years old, as well as various smaller shrines dedicated to deities such as Chausuyama Inari, Black Dragon Shrine, White Dragon Shrine, and Daijo Shinsen Chintaku Reifu Sonshin. Additionally, during the spring "Setsubun Festival," a "Star Festival" is held, which involves purifying residences and scattering star spirit seeds.
Hokoku Shrine is renowned for the "One Dream Prayer" tradition, where it is believed that the shrine will grant a once-in-a-lifetime wish. This custom attracts visitors not only from Japan but also from overseas.
Main Deity:
Emperor Sujun
Associated Deities:
