A Day Trip from Hat Yai to Samila Beach: Sun, Sea & Serpent Legends

During my recent trip to southern Thailand, I took a short but unforgettable day trip from Hat Yai to Samila Beach in Songkhla. Located just about 30 kilometers away, it’s a perfect coastal escape from the bustling city vibes of Hat Yai.

Getting There

I started my journey early in the morning. From Hat Yai, I took a minivan from the bus terminal heading to Songkhla. The ride was smooth and scenic, taking around 45 minutes. The roads were lined with lush greenery, and I caught glimpses of local life along the way — small food stalls, temples, and even school children in their uniforms waving as we passed.

First Impressions

As soon as I arrived at Samila Beach, I was greeted by a peaceful atmosphere and the gentle sound of waves. The beach wasn’t overly crowded, which made it even more enjoyable. The soft golden sand and swaying palm trees made it feel like a hidden paradise.

The Golden Mermaid

One of the highlights of the beach is the famous Golden Mermaid Statue, a well-known symbol of Songkhla. Legend says she combs her hair while sitting on the beach, and local fishermen once saw her and fell in love. The statue is beautiful, and many tourists were taking photos and leaving offerings. I joined in for a quick selfie too, of course!

Exploring Around

Besides relaxing on the beach, I took a short walk to explore the nearby Khao Tang Kuan Hill. You can take a cable car up the hill and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Songkhla coastline — definitely worth the trip! There are also playful monkeys along the path, so hold onto your snacks!

I also tried some local street food near the beach — grilled squid, coconut ice cream, and iced Thai tea. Everything was delicious and affordable.

Heading Back

In the late afternoon, I caught a songthaew (shared pickup truck taxi) back to Hat Yai. The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. It was the perfect end to a relaxing beach day.

Final Thoughts

If you're visiting Hat Yai and have a day to spare, Samila Beach is a must-visit destination. It offers a great mix of natural beauty, local culture, and a break from city life. I left with sandy feet, a sun-kissed smile, and some great memories.
