Introducing Baozhu Temple

Kaifeng Baozhu Temple is located on the north side of the west end of Donghuamen Street in Kaifeng. Facing south, the temple features three courtyards and two levels. Its overhanging eaves and corners reflect a blend of Song and Qing architectural styles. On the central axis stands the Hall of Heavenly Kings, enshrining Maitreya Bodhisattva, Skanda Bodhisattva, and the Four Heavenly Kings. Flanking the east and west sides are the bell and drum towers. The Main Hall, situated in the center of the front courtyard, enshrines the Three Saints of the Avatamsaka Sutra and the Guanyin of the Sea Island. In the center of the back courtyard lies the Puzhao Tower, whose upper floor houses the Sutra Library, housing a Burmese jade reclining Buddha statue and a copy of the Chinese Buddhist Canon, a gift from the Taiwan Buddha Foundation.

Baozhu Temple, formerly known as the Henan Buddhist Society Women's Forest, was founded by the centenarian Venerable Master Jingyan (formerly Executive Director of the Buddhist Association of China, President of the Henan Buddhist Association, Member of the Henan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Standing Committee Member of the Kaifeng Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference). In 1924, Master Jingyan, following the instructions of Master Taixu, traveled to the Central Plains to spread Buddhism. He founded the Henan Buddhist Society Women's Forest in Kaifeng, continuing the lineage of Master Ciyun Guangyan. Currently, over ten nuns reside in the temple, all with a junior high school education or above, and are deeply devoted to the Dharma. All nuns adhere to the monastic rules of living together. They attend the morning and evening halls, eat at two o'clock, and observe a half-month Buddhist retreat. They observe the precepts, live in harmony, and observe orderly Buddhist practices in accordance with the Dharma.
