Highway 152 between Santa Nella and Gilroy has recently been reported to have significant potholes in the #2 (right) lane on the Santa Nella side. These road conditions can pose a hazard, particularly for drivers who prefer to stay in the right lane or need to navigate around other vehicles.

Drivers currently face a choice when traveling this stretch:

  • Stay in the right lane and carefully navigate around or over the potholes, which can be risky for vehicle suspension, tires, and overall safety.
  • Move into the left lane to avoid potholes, but this may require maintaining higher speeds (around 80 mph) to keep pace with traffic, which can be stressful and potentially dangerous if other drivers attempt to pass or push you off the lane.

Additional tips for this section of Highway 152:

  • Reduce speed when approaching areas with visible potholes to minimize damage to your vehicle.
  • Maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead to allow for sudden lane changes around potholes.
  • Stay alert for traffic in the left lane if you choose to move over, as passing vehicles may approach quickly.
  • Check online traffic or road condition updates before your trip, as temporary repairs or warnings may be posted by CalTrans.

CalTrans is responsible for highway maintenance, and it is hoped that repairs will be made to this stretch soon. In the meantime, caution, defensive driving, and awareness of lane options are essential for safely navigating this area.
