Visiting the Redwoods - where to stay, please?
Please may I have some suggestions from this forum:
We have a short road trip starting and ending in Portland. Mostly to visit Oregon (and I've already asked for help on the Oregon forum for that portion of the trip).
However, having never visited the state and national parks of the Redwoods but visited much of the rest of California several times, we thought we'd also tick that box.
Where should we base ourselves for accommodation convenient to the parks but north of them rather than south? From a map Eureka looks likely but I know nothing about the place. We prefer after a day of driving and hiking to find a walkable town so we can stroll to a bar and/or dinner from our lodging.
Our dates will be around the end of April 25 if that matters.
Any particular hotels/motels you'd recommend or advise we avoid?
Thanks you for your help.
Visiting the Redwoods at the end of April is a wonderful idea, as spring brings milder weather, fewer crowds than summer, and lush greenery. For your trip north of the parks, Eureka is indeed one of the best options to base yourself. It offers convenient access to several sections of the Redwood National and State Parks while giving you a charming, walkable town experience for dining and evening strolls.
Why Eureka Works Well:
- Located about 20–30 minutes from the southern and central sections of Redwood National and State Parks, including the Avenue of the Giants.
- Historic Old Town Eureka has numerous restaurants, breweries, and cafes within walking distance.
- Offers a range of lodging options from boutique inns to chain hotels, so you can choose based on comfort and budget.
- Easy access to Hwy 101, making it convenient for both arriving from Oregon and continuing south along the coast.
Recommended Neighborhoods & Lodging:
- Old Town Eureka: Ideal for walking to restaurants, shops, and breweries. Hotels like the Charming Historic Inns or bed-and-breakfast options provide character and central location.
- Waterfront / Sequoia Park Area: Offers scenic views along Humboldt Bay and is close to Sequoia Park Zoo. Some motels and inns in this area offer easy access to both town amenities and Hwy 101.
- Main Highway 101 Corridor: Convenient if you prefer chain hotels or need easier vehicle access. Less charming for walking but practical for arrival/departure.
Specific Hotel Recommendations:
- Red Lion Hotel Eureka: A larger, comfortable option with bay views and parking. Convenient location just outside Old Town.
- Best Western Plus Bayshore Inn: On the waterfront, close to walking paths and easy driving access to the parks.
- Inn at 2nd & C: Boutique inn in Old Town with walkable access to dining and evening strolls.
- Admiral Inn: Budget-friendly with reasonable access to Old Town and the parks.
Tips for Your Stay:
- Book early, as late April is the beginning of tourist season and accommodations can fill quickly.
- Check for hotels that offer easy parking if you plan to explore multiple areas of the parks daily.
- If you prefer a quieter stay, consider lodging slightly north in Arcata, about 10–15 minutes from Eureka. It’s a college town with some restaurants and a more relaxed vibe.
- Be prepared for cool, possibly rainy weather. Even in April, temperatures can range from the mid-40s to mid-60s, so bring layers for hiking and walking around town.
Overall, Eureka provides the perfect combination of proximity to the Redwoods, walkable dining and nightlife, and a charming historic atmosphere. For a short stay with a day of hiking each day, basing yourself here will minimize driving time while allowing for an enjoyable evening experience.
