Where to stay?
Two seniors doing a road trip this fall. We’ll be in St. Louis after a stay in Memphis with our next stop in Hannibal.
We’re planning to visit the gateway arch and basilica and then the historic aircraft restoration museum if we can get a tour, Route 66 state park and Lewis and Clark Boat House.
Is there a convenient area to stay for two or three nights? We’d like some place where there are good restaurants, comfortable mid priced hotels, safe parking and not crazy traffic.
From other posts it doesn’t sound safe to visit the arch and basilica if our suv hasn’t been unloaded at a hotel first.
Thanks
For a comfortable and convenient stay in St. Louis, especially for seniors on a road trip, it’s best to select a neighborhood that balances proximity to attractions, safety, parking availability, and a good selection of mid-priced hotels and restaurants.
Here are some of the best areas to consider:
- Downtown / Gateway Arch Area – This is ideal if your main focus is visiting the Gateway Arch and the Lewis and Clark Boat House. Many hotels offer secure parking, and you can easily walk to restaurants and attractions. Traffic can be moderate but manageable, and it’s generally safe during the day. Good options include Marriott, Hyatt Regency, and Drury Plaza Hotel.
- Central West End – A charming, safe, and walkable neighborhood with boutique hotels, plenty of dining options, and easy access to the Basilica. Parking is usually available either on-site or street parking. This area has a quieter, more residential feel compared to downtown.
- Clayton / Brentwood – Located a few miles west of downtown, this area is safer, has less traffic, and offers several mid-priced hotels. Dining options are plentiful, although you will need to drive to reach downtown attractions like the Arch.
- Historic Soulard / Lafayette Square – For a neighborhood with character, good restaurants, and historic charm, these areas are ideal. Parking can be easier than downtown, and it’s a short drive to major attractions. It’s quieter in the evenings and generally safe.
Tips for your visit:
- Unload your SUV at your hotel first if you plan to visit downtown sites, as some areas near the Arch or Basilica can feel less safe with a vehicle full of luggage or valuables.
- Check if your hotel offers free or reasonably priced secure parking. This is especially helpful if you plan to leave your car for several hours while exploring downtown.
- Midweek visits often have less traffic and more availability for hotel rooms.
- If planning to visit the Aircraft Restoration Museum, Route 66 State Park, or other locations outside downtown, renting a car or using your SUV is advisable, as public transit is limited.
Overall, staying either downtown for convenience or Central West End/Clayton for a quieter, safe experience with easy access to restaurants will make your two to three-night stay in St. Louis comfortable and enjoyable.
