Staying in San Diego itself for a couple of days before heading up to Carlsbad and am not sure whether to go the airbnb route or hotel. We plan to do lots of walking around and also would love an airport shuttle. Getting a car just before we head up the coast so not sure how to coordinate that. Any recommendations would be great.
We were originally thinking of staying at the Wyndham Bayside but the reviews are not good.
When deciding between a hotel and an Airbnb in downtown San Diego or the Gaslamp Quarter, several factors should guide your choice, especially since you want to do a lot of walking and need airport shuttle access.
Hotels: Staying at a hotel downtown gives you convenience, services, and amenities such as daily housekeeping, front desk assistance, and often airport shuttle options. Since you don’t plan to rent a car immediately, a hotel can simplify logistics. Many downtown hotels are within walking distance of the Gaslamp, Seaport Village, and other attractions.
Airbnb: Offers more space and flexibility, which can be good if you want a kitchen or more privacy. Some units may be within walking distance to downtown attractions, but airport shuttle service may not be included. If you choose Airbnb, check the location carefully and read reviews to ensure safety and accessibility.
Other considerations: Since you plan to rent a car before heading to Carlsbad, a hotel that can hold your luggage after check-out or allow late car pick-up might be helpful. Downtown hotels generally make this easier than Airbnb hosts.
In summary, for a short stay with lots of walking, easy access to dining and nightlife, and convenience with luggage and potential shuttle service, a hotel in the Gaslamp or downtown is generally more practical. Airbnb could work if you prioritize space and privacy, but double-check transportation options.
