Higgs Beach Playground
On our trip to KW last March, the children's playground at Higg's Beach was closed to the public. Has it been replaced/fixed at this point? We are headed down again this March, and bringing little ones.
Good question. Short answer: the Higgs Beach playground has been a bit up and down, but there is some encouraging news — mixed as it may be.
Here’s what I found based on the most recent local reports and user discussions:
- According to Monroe County Parks & Beaches, construction for the playground has started.
- TripAdvisor users report conflicting information: some say it was still closed earlier in 2025, but others claim the playground “is reopened.”
- A Reddit thread from early 2025 indicates that the playground “was locked … a sign says it is dangerous.” However, another commenter later said: “It’s open now.”
- Monroe County also notes that after Hurricane Ian, several repairs are underway for Higgs Beach amenities — including the playground — although it may take some time before everything is fully restored.
Bottom line & tips:
- There is a good chance the playground may be accessible when you visit, but it may not be fully updated or “brand new” equipment yet.
- Bring some backup: since playground availability seems a bit uncertain, you might also plan to visit nearby playgrounds like Astro City (across the street) as an alternative.
- If you can, check with the Monroe County Parks & Beaches office closer to your trip to get the latest status on repairs and playground access.
