Sandbar trip worth it?

Wondering if anyone has taken one of the charters/excursions to a sandbar (I think Jewfish Key?) We have a trip to Key West coming up with friends in a few weeks (just us 4 adults in our 30s). They found a dolphin encounter and sandbar excursion, which is 5 hours. That seems like a long time compared to some other excursions, so we're on the fence about whether it would be worth it.

Anyone have experience with this particular tour or similar ones? Thanks

Taking a sandbar excursion in Key West, such as the one near Jewfish Key, can be a very enjoyable experience, especially if you’re looking for a mix of relaxation, sightseeing, and unique water experiences. These trips typically combine cruising through the shallow, crystal-clear waters of the Keys, stopping at sandbars to swim, snorkel, or just hang out, and sometimes include additional activities like spotting dolphins or enjoying drinks on the water.

Here are some considerations based on what most travelers report:

  • Duration: A 5-hour tour may seem long, but it usually includes transportation to and from the sandbar, time at the sandbar itself, and often other scenic stops. Many guests find the duration reasonable because it allows for a leisurely pace and plenty of time in the water without feeling rushed.
  • Activities: You can typically expect snorkeling, swimming, and wading on the sandbar. Some tours also provide paddleboards, kayaks, or floating devices. If your group enjoys water activities and photo opportunities, the trip tends to be very rewarding.
  • Atmosphere: Sandbar tours are often social and fun, with smaller groups allowing for a relaxed vibe. The boat ride itself gives you scenic views of the shallow Keys waters and local wildlife, sometimes including dolphins.

Other points to consider:

  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and water shoes for comfort on the sandbar.
  • Food and drinks may or may not be included—check the specific tour details.
  • Early morning or late afternoon tours can be less crowded and more pleasant in terms of sun exposure.
  • Some tours combine a dolphin encounter with the sandbar visit, which adds extra value and unique experiences if your group enjoys wildlife.

In summary, for a group of adults in their 30s, a sandbar excursion is generally considered worthwhile, especially if you enjoy a mix of relaxing, swimming, and scenic cruising. The 5-hour length allows enough time to enjoy both the sandbar and surrounding waters without feeling rushed. If you prefer a shorter, purely sightseeing option, other charters exist, but you may miss the hands-on water experiences.
