Alternatives to Google and WhatsApp in China
We are going to HongKong and then on to a tour of China.
We will get a SIM card in HongKong, but what software should I download?
I understand that Google translate, Google maps and WhatsApp do not work in China, so if we need to contact our guide or use the Google apps these are not available.
Should I get some Chinese software and what would you recommend?
Can I get this in the UK?
Thanks
Arthur
When travelling to mainland China, it’s important to understand that many international apps and services like Google services (Maps, Translate, Gmail) and WhatsApp are blocked due to the Great Firewall. Therefore, you’ll need alternatives that work locally.
Here are some recommended apps and software:
- Messaging and Communication: WeChat is the most widely used messaging app in China. It allows text, voice, video calls, and also payments. It is essential for communicating with guides, hotels, and locals.
- Maps and Navigation: Baidu Maps and AutoNavi (Gaode Maps) are the main mapping apps in China. Google Maps may work sporadically with a VPN, but Baidu and Gaode are reliable for driving, walking, and public transport directions.
- Translation: Baidu Translate and Youdao Translate are good alternatives to Google Translate. They can translate text, speech, and even images.
- Ride Hailing: DiDi Chuxing is the main ride-hailing app (similar to Uber) and is widely used in China. You can book taxis and private cars easily.
- Travel Planning: Ctrip (Trip.com) is a good app for booking hotels, trains, and flights in China. It has an English interface and is widely accepted.
- Payment: If you want to use mobile payments, WeChat Pay or Alipay are necessary. Some banks issue cards that work with these apps for foreigners.
Availability outside China:
- WeChat, Ctrip/Trip.com, Baidu Translate, and DiDi can be downloaded in the UK app stores, though some features may require a Chinese phone number for full functionality.
- Setting up WeChat Pay or Alipay as a foreigner can be challenging outside China, so it’s easier to set them up once you are in China with your local SIM card.
Tips:
- Download all apps before entering China.
- If you want to continue using Google Maps or WhatsApp, a VPN is required, but be aware that VPNs are regulated and may not always work reliably.
- Ensure your Hong Kong SIM card allows roaming data in mainland China or plan to buy a local Chinese SIM card for data connectivity.
In summary, for smooth travel and communication in China, prioritize WeChat for messaging, Baidu/Gaode Maps for navigation, Ctrip for bookings, and Baidu/Youdao Translate for language assistance.
