Transit Without Visa (TWOV) for Canadians

Hi! I urgently have to visit China this weekend for a week.

I plan on taking advantage of the TWOV. Does the following itinerary qualify for it?

SEOUL - CHENGDU - MANILA

I am a Canadian citizen.

Thank you in advance for your help

For Canadian citizens, China offers a 24/72/144-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) depending on the city and type of entry. The TWOV allows eligible travelers to stay in certain cities or regions without a visa if they are transiting to a third country and meet all requirements.

In your itinerary – SEOUL → CHENGDU → MANILA – here are the considerations for TWOV:

  • Eligible city: Chengdu is one of the cities offering 144-hour TWOV for citizens of certain countries, including Canada.
  • Transit requirement: You must be traveling from a foreign country (Seoul, in your case) and continue to a third country (Manila) by air. TWOV does not apply if your onward flight returns to your original country.
  • Valid passport: Your Canadian passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and you must have confirmed onward tickets to Manila within the allowed TWOV period (up to 144 hours for Chengdu).
  • Stay limitations: You can only stay within the designated Chengdu metropolitan area or the permitted province (Sichuan province for 144-hour TWOV) during your transit.

Practical advice:

  • Make sure your flights are on separate tickets if possible, as airline staff may ask for proof of onward travel to a third country.
  • At Chengdu airport, go to the dedicated 144-hour TWOV counter to process your entry. You may be asked for hotel details or itinerary within Sichuan province.
  • Do not plan to leave Sichuan province beyond the allowed area, otherwise your TWOV may be invalid.
  • Carry all necessary documents, including passport, onward tickets, and hotel bookings.

Summary:

Yes, your itinerary qualifies for the 144-hour TWOV in Chengdu as long as you meet all the requirements above. Make sure to follow the entry procedures at the airport carefully to avoid issues.
