Quick Marta Question

We are arriving at ATL on a Wednesday night at 8:30PM with young kids and staying at hotel near aquarium. Last time we did the same trip we took MARTA no problem from airport to Peachtree Center, but it was during the day. Just asking to check on safety of MARTA at about 9pm at night on a Wednesday? And, is it better to get off at Civic Center or Peachtree Center? Thanks!

Traveling on MARTA with young kids at night can be safe, but like any large city, it's good to take some precautions. Here are some insights on your questions:

Regarding safety, MARTA trains are generally safe, even at 9 PM, but it's always best to be cautious, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area. The busiest stations, such as the Airport station, Peachtree Center, and Civic Center, are generally well-lit and have a decent number of passengers, even in the evening. However, late at night, the crowds thin out, and you might experience fewer people on the train and in the stations. Here are some things to keep in mind for safety:

  • Stay close to the exit and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Use the elevators or escalators at stations rather than taking the stairs for added convenience, especially with kids.
  • Make sure to keep your personal belongings close and secure during the trip.
  • Look for other people traveling with families or groups—this can help you feel more comfortable on your journey.

As for the stations, both Civic Center and Peachtree Center are located close to the aquarium, but there are a few differences to consider:

  • Peachtree Center: This is the most direct station to the Georgia Aquarium, located just a short walk (around 5-10 minutes). It is a major station in downtown and tends to be busier and more well-lit compared to Civic Center. It’s a safe and convenient option, especially if you have young children, as it’s a more straightforward walk.
  • Civic Center: While it is also close to the aquarium (about a 10-15 minute walk), this station is slightly less busy and located further from the aquarium compared to Peachtree Center. Depending on the time of night, you may find it quieter and less crowded, but this could also mean fewer people around in case you need assistance.

Given the time of night and the presence of young children, I would recommend getting off at Peachtree Center as it is closer to the aquarium, and there will likely be more people around. It will also be easier for you to navigate and less confusing than the Civic Center station at night. Both stations are safe, but Peachtree Center offers the convenience of a more direct route to your hotel or destination.

Overall, MARTA is a good choice for getting to the aquarium area, even at night. Just be mindful of your surroundings and take the safer option when possible. Enjoy your visit to Atlanta!
