Layover in Shenzhen

We have a layover from 9pm-1pm in Shenzhen (it was shorter but our flights got changed). Can we leave the airport to go to an airport hotel for the night without a visa? What I’ve read seems to say less than 24 hours with a ticket elsewhere (we’re going back to the UK from Hanoi) is fine, but I didn’t know if there are any issues since it’s a layover of flights booked together as well?

If you have a layover in Shenzhen from 9 PM to 1 PM the next day and wish to leave the airport, you may be eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit policy, depending on your nationality. This policy allows travelers from most countries to enter mainland China for up to 24 hours without a visa, provided they have a confirmed onward flight to a third country or region.

Important details and considerations:

  • You must hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region (in your case, back to the UK from Hanoi). Flights booked together generally satisfy this requirement.
  • The 24-hour period is counted from the time you clear immigration at Shenzhen airport.
  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

Practical advice for leaving the airport:

  • You can take a taxi or airport shuttle to a nearby airport hotel for overnight rest. Shenzhen has several hotels within 15–30 minutes from the airport.
  • Carry all your travel documents, including boarding passes for your onward flight, to show at immigration and hotel check-in.
  • Plan your time carefully, considering traffic and check-in procedures at the airport for your onward flight. Aim to return at least 2–3 hours before departure.

Potential issues to be aware of:

  • Immigration officers may ask about your onward flight; having clear evidence of your connecting flight is crucial.
  • While most travelers have no problem, regulations can vary slightly depending on nationality, so confirm with Shenzhen airport authorities or your airline if in doubt.

In summary, with a layover under 24 hours and confirmed onward tickets, leaving Shenzhen airport to stay at a nearby hotel is generally permitted without a visa. Just ensure timely return for your connecting flight and keep all documentation handy.
