Itinerary for Yunnan

Hi all! I'm new here.

I'm planning to visit Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-la in first half of December.

My question would be for Shangri-la. I'm planning to stay there for 4 days and 3 nights. Is that too long?

I saw many websites that claim there's nothing to see in Shangri-la. Is that true? I was thinking of taking it slow, going to Napahai, Balagezong, Potatso and Pudacuo Park. Are there things to see?

My parents would be following me so no hiking since it's high altitude. Walking is fine.

Would appreciate your feedback

Spending 4 days and 3 nights in Shangri-la is not too long, especially if you plan to explore at a relaxed pace without strenuous hiking. The city and surrounding areas are at high altitude (around 3,200 meters), so taking it slow is wise, particularly for your parents.

Shangri-la itself has charming old towns, Tibetan culture, and monasteries. While some websites may downplay the attractions, there are several worthwhile sites accessible with gentle walking:

  • Napahai Nature Reserve: A scenic plateau wetland with walking paths and birdwatching opportunities. You can enjoy the views without hiking.
  • Potatso National Park: Offers easy trails and beautiful lakes and forests. You can take short walks or use park shuttle buses for minimal effort.
  • Balagezong: This scenic valley features rivers, forests, and Tibetan villages. The area can be explored via short walks or local transport; no strenuous hiking is necessary to enjoy the main viewpoints.
  • Shangri-la Old Town: A compact area with traditional Tibetan architecture, shops, and cafes. Walking here is easy and culturally enriching.

Other considerations:

  • High altitude can cause mild discomfort, so plan light activities on the first day to acclimate.
  • Weather in early December can be cold, so dress warmly and check road accessibility for the scenic areas.
  • Transportation between sites is feasible via taxis, private cars, or local tour services, which helps avoid long walks or hiking.

Overall, your plan to take it slow and focus on scenic spots like Napahai, Balagezong, Potatso, and Pudacuo Park is realistic. Four days allow you to enjoy the Tibetan culture, landscapes, and gentle walks without rushing, making it comfortable for both yourself and your parents.
