Sales Tax Refund

Apologies if this has already been asked however I can’t seem to find any clear answers.

We’re visiting Atlanta for a few days in September. Were from the UK so would like, is possible, to reclaim the sales tax from the inevitable shopping.

Could someone please advise the easiest way to do this?

Thanks

Unfortunately, as of now, the United States does not have a nationwide system that allows foreign visitors to reclaim sales tax (often referred to as VAT refunds in the UK). This differs from some other countries, where visitors can claim back sales tax on their purchases. However, there are a few things to know about sales tax and how it works in the U.S. when you're visiting Atlanta:

Sales Tax in the U.S.: Sales tax in the U.S. is typically charged at the state and local levels, and the rates can vary from state to state, and even between cities. For example, in Georgia, the sales tax rate in Atlanta is typically around 8-8.5%. However, there is no system in place that allows foreign visitors to automatically reclaim this tax, as there is no VAT system in place in the U.S. like there is in the UK or EU.

Tax-Free Shopping Events: There are occasional "Tax-Free Shopping" events in Georgia, particularly during back-to-school seasons. These events allow shoppers to purchase certain items (like clothing and school supplies) without paying the sales tax for a limited time. However, these events are very specific in terms of dates and the types of items that are exempt from tax. Unfortunately, this won’t cover all purchases, and you would need to check if your trip coincides with one of these events.

What Can You Do?

  • Shop at Stores that Offer a Tax Refund Program (Limited): Some stores, particularly large department stores or shopping malls, might offer a "tax refund" option, but it’s not common. They typically provide this service for tourists from certain countries, but it’s always best to check directly with the store before making large purchases.
  • Look for Global Refund Services (if Available): Some international companies (like Global Blue or Premier Tax-Free) offer VAT refund services, but these are more commonly found in larger cities and tend to be more focused on high-end shopping districts. However, they are not available everywhere, and the refund process can be more complicated than in countries with a VAT refund system.
  • Keep Your Receipts: Even though you can’t claim sales tax back, make sure to keep your receipts as you may still be able to use them for warranty or return purposes if necessary.

Unfortunately, there is no simple or widely available way for foreign visitors to claim back sales tax during their stay in Atlanta. It’s best to enjoy the shopping experience and understand that sales tax is a part of the cost of doing business in the U.S.

If you're planning to do a lot of shopping, you might want to look into sales tax-free events or specific stores that may offer refunds, but in general, it’s not something you can expect on every purchase. Have fun shopping in Atlanta!
