Family of 5, one night in grand canyon
We are doing an Arizona road trip for our kids spring break week.
Tentative schedule is
Fly into Phoenix
3 nights in Sedona
1 night in Page to do Antelope Canyon
1 night in Grand Canyon
2 nights in Vegas to end the trip with some relaxation
Fly home from Vegas
A friend suggested for GC, we stay within the park since we're only there for a quick overnight. Looking at Maswik Lodge but not sure if they can fit 5? Any other good spots for 5 people that are closeby or not too far outside park?
We are 2 adults, and 3 kids ages 15,12,8
Thanks!
For a family of five spending just one night at the Grand Canyon, staying inside the park is a smart move to maximize your time and avoid long drives. Maswik Lodge is a reasonable option, but room configurations may limit you, as standard rooms usually accommodate up to 4 people. Here’s a detailed breakdown of options for your family:
Inside the Park
- Maswik Lodge: Located a short walk from the South Rim, this lodge is convenient. They offer family rooms, but you’ll need to verify if a single room can accommodate 5; sometimes they allow a rollaway bed for an extra person. Book as early as possible because availability is tight.
- Yavapai Lodge: Also inside the park near the South Rim, with some rooms suitable for families of 5. They offer two-room suites or rooms with a sleeper sofa, which might be perfect for your group.
- El Tovar Hotel: Iconic and right on the Rim. Rooms are smaller and usually sleep 4, but you can sometimes get a combination of adjoining rooms or a suite to fit a family of 5. Higher cost but amazing views.
Outside the Park (Close Proximity)
- Tusayan: A small town 5 minutes from the South Rim entrance. Options include Best Western Premier, Holiday Inn Express, or Grand Hotel. Many have rooms or suites for 5, and you’ll still be very close to the park for early morning or evening Rim visits.
- Bed and Breakfasts or Vacation Rentals: In Tusayan or the nearby area, you may find larger family-friendly options, sometimes with kitchens and multiple bedrooms, which can be more comfortable for 5 people.
Tips for Your Short Stay
- Book as far in advance as possible; spring break is a busy time at the Grand Canyon.
- If you stay inside the park, you’ll have easy access to sunset or sunrise viewpoints without worrying about travel time.
- Consider room amenities: some lodges offer microwaves or mini-fridges, which can help with kids’ snacks and meals.
- Plan your visit to key viewpoints (e.g., Mather Point, Yavapai Point) since your time is limited.
For your itinerary, staying inside the park is ideal if availability allows, but Tusayan is a convenient fallback that ensures a comfortable stay for all five family members.
