Noma
How is the NoMa area? My husband and I are staying at The Morrow a Hikton curio.
NoMa, short for “North of Massachusetts Avenue,” is a neighborhood in northeast Washington, DC. Over the past decade it has undergone significant development and gentrification, transforming from a primarily industrial area into a lively, modern urban district with offices, residences, and retail spaces.
Here’s an overview of what you can expect in NoMa:
- Safety: NoMa is generally considered safe, especially in the areas immediately surrounding The Morrow. Like most urban neighborhoods, it’s wise to stay aware at night and stick to well-lit streets, but serious crime is relatively low compared to some other DC neighborhoods.
- Vibe: The area has a modern, business-oriented feel with a mix of residential condos, office buildings, and new restaurants. It’s quieter than neighborhoods like Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan but has a few trendy bars and eateries.
- Dining and Amenities: You’ll find casual restaurants, coffee shops, and a few bars within walking distance. The area is not as dense in nightlife or tourist attractions as downtown, but it’s convenient for weekday visits and business travelers.
- Walkability and Transit: NoMa is extremely well-connected by public transit. The NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station on the Red Line is very close, making it easy to reach downtown, Capitol Hill, or other parts of the city. Walking or biking to nearby attractions like Union Market is feasible.
- Nearby Attractions: Union Market, a vibrant food hall and marketplace, is just a short walk or bike ride away. The neighborhood is also within a reasonable distance of the Capitol and National Mall via Metro or a 20–30 minute bike ride.
In summary, NoMa is a practical and safe choice if you prioritize modern accommodations, easy Metro access, and quieter surroundings. It’s ideal for those who don’t mind a short transit ride to the main tourist hubs, and it offers a glimpse into one of DC’s newer, revitalized neighborhoods.
