Page to Grand Canyon on sunday

Hello,

We are driving from Page to the Grand canyon tomorrow/ Sunday after our AC tour which ends at noon. If we leave at around 1 pm from Page and stop over at Horseshoe Bend and then proceed to the GC will it make sense to enter from the east entrance so we can see sunset views? We are staying in GC at the maswik lodge and will be leaving the following day to go to Sedona.

Thank you

Your plan to leave Page around 1 PM after your Antelope Canyon tour and stop at Horseshoe Bend is very reasonable. Horseshoe Bend is only about 10 minutes south of Page, so it’s convenient to visit without adding too much time to your drive.

Driving from Page to Grand Canyon South Rim typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours without stops. Since you plan to enter from the east entrance to catch sunset views, here’s a suggested approach:

  • From Page, head west on US-89 toward Cameron. This route takes you past some scenic viewpoints of the desert and Navajo lands.
  • After Horseshoe Bend, continue on US-89 south and then east via US-64 to Desert View Drive. Entering from the east entrance (Desert View) allows you to catch iconic viewpoints along Desert View Drive like Navajo Point, Lipan Point, and Desert View Watchtower.
  • Timing: Leaving Page at 1 PM, stopping ~45-60 minutes at Horseshoe Bend, you could reach Desert View around 4-4:30 PM, depending on traffic. Sunset in late November is around 4:45-5 PM, so you’ll have a short window to enjoy the eastern viewpoints and then continue to Maswik Lodge.

Additional tips:

  • Check the Grand Canyon visitor center or National Park Service website for sunset times and road conditions.
  • Desert View Drive is slower due to scenic pullouts, so allow extra time for stops and photos.
  • Maswik Lodge is just a short drive from Grand Canyon Village, so you should have time to settle in after sunset.
  • If you prefer a more leisurely sunset, you can also plan a brief stop at Hopi Point on the South Rim after checking in, but it may be dark by the time you reach there if you leave Page at 1 PM.

Overall, entering from the east is a great choice for scenic sunset opportunities. Just keep in mind the daylight hours in late December and plan your stops to ensure you reach the viewpoints while there’s still light.
