Seward to Alaska post cruise in May
Hi Guys, I’m looking for advice on an itinerary post our cruise in may 26. We are debarking in Seward may 15 th .I’m thinking 2 nights in Seward then make our way to anchorage. I’ve heard that rentals in Seward are expensive so is it better to take the train / bus to anchorage then pick up rental there?
Then make our way to Fairbanks via Denali . I haven’t looked in any time restraints yet . What do you guys recommend please and where is the best place in Denali to stay.
We aren’t hikers unless it’s flat as 2 knee replacements and back surgery.
I’m so excited.
Any tours that people can recommend would be appreciated too. I’m thinking we will do a tour to artic circle from Fairbanks as it’s a massive drive along Dalton hwy to do in a day…..
After your cruise debarkation in Seward on May 15, you have a fantastic opportunity to explore Southcentral Alaska at a relaxed pace. Since you’re not up for strenuous hiking due to knee and back concerns, planning flat, scenic activities and comfortable lodging is ideal.
Seward stay and transport options:
- Two nights in Seward is perfect to enjoy Kenai Fjords National Park. Consider a wildlife and glacier cruise, which is accessible and does not require hiking. These tours offer views of calving glaciers, whales, sea otters, puffins, and more.
- Car rentals in Seward tend to be more expensive than in Anchorage, so a practical option is to take the Alaska Railroad or a bus from Seward to Anchorage (about 2.5–3 hours) and pick up a rental car there for your onward journey to Denali and Fairbanks. This can save money and gives you more flexibility for exploring the interior.
Anchorage to Denali and Fairbanks:
- Drive from Anchorage to Denali National Park (approx. 4–5 hours). Since hiking is limited, consider shuttle bus tours into the park for wildlife viewing and scenic stops. The park shuttle and tour buses access flatter areas and major viewing points without long treks.
- Best places to stay near Denali:
- Denali Park Village: Convenient for bus tours and has comfortable accommodations and dining options.
- McKinley Chalet Resort: Offers hotel-style rooms and easy access to shuttle pick-up points for park tours.
- Outside the park (Healy area): More budget-friendly with nearby access to shuttle stops and tour operators.
- After 1–2 nights in Denali, continue north to Fairbanks (approx. 2–3 hours). Fairbanks serves as the gateway to Arctic Circle tours.
Tour recommendations:
- Kenai Fjords Cruise: From Seward, choose a 4–6 hour cruise suitable for easy mobility, providing glacier and wildlife viewing.
- Denali Shuttle or Tundra Wilderness Tour: These tours are designed for those who prefer minimal walking and want to see wildlife like moose, bears, caribou, and Dall sheep.
- Arctic Circle Tour: From Fairbanks, several guided tour companies offer day trips along Dalton Highway to the Arctic Circle. This is a long day (12–14 hours), but you’ll travel in a comfortable vehicle with experienced guides, making stops for photos and minimal walking.
- Fairbanks City Tours: Consider short tours to see the University of Alaska Museum, Chena River, and local cultural sites if you prefer lighter activity days.
Itinerary suggestion for a comfortable pace:
- May 15–17: Seward – Kenai Fjords cruise, easy sightseeing.
- May 17: Take train or bus to Anchorage, pick up rental.
- May 18–19: Denali area – shuttle or guided tours, stay at Denali Park Village or McKinley Chalet.
- May 20–22: Fairbanks – Arctic Circle tour, optional city and cultural tours.
This itinerary balances scenic highlights, accessible activities, and manageable driving distances, ensuring a memorable Alaskan adventure without strain.
