Weather in late Dec
I plan to visit Xian in late Dec, roughly the 3rd and 4th week of Dec. May spend the x’mas there. Can anyone give me an idea of what the weather will be like? Other than the terracotta, I also want to visit some suburban attractions, for example the Li Shan (Li mountain) and Hua Mountain. Will it snow? What is temp range? Is it freezing to stroll on the street?
Visiting Xi’an in late December means you will be experiencing the city’s winter season, which is cold but usually dry. Here’s a detailed overview of what to expect:
Temperature and weather:
- Average daytime temperatures are typically around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F).
- Nighttime temperatures can drop close to 0°C (32°F) and sometimes below, especially in the third and fourth week of December.
- Snowfall is possible but not very common within the city itself. However, the surrounding mountains, like Li Shan (Lishan) and Hua Shan, may have snow or icy patches, particularly at higher elevations.
- The air is generally dry, so layering and windproof clothing are recommended.
Visiting outdoor attractions:
- For the Terracotta Warriors and city attractions, dressing warmly with a coat, scarf, gloves, and hat is recommended. Walking around the streets can feel chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings.
- For Hua Shan, prepare for much colder conditions at the summit. Snow and ice can make the trails slippery, so proper footwear with good grip is essential, along with multiple warm layers.
- Lishan (Li Mountain) also tends to be colder and windier than the city, so plan your visit accordingly and check local weather reports before heading out.
Additional tips:
- Bring thermal layers for comfort during extended walks or hikes.
- Consider checking weather forecasts closer to your trip, as December weather can vary year to year.
- Public transport and taxis are reliable, which helps if the cold becomes uncomfortable for walking long distances.
In summary, expect cold weather with possible frost and occasional snow in the mountains. Dressing in layers and preparing for chilly winds will make your visit more comfortable. Street strolls are doable with proper winter clothing, and mountain excursions will require extra preparation.
