Holiday festivities/activities and where to stay?
My two young adult sons and I will be coming to the area the weekend before Christmas. I am looking for recommendations of "Christmassy" things to see and do that weekend. We would ideally like recommendations anywhere from Old Town Scottsdale to Cave Creek. Also recommendations of where to stay would be greatly appreciated. Proximity to restaurants, shops, hiking and pickleball courts would be a bonus. (I realize we might not be able to have it all) Open to hotel/resorts or AirBnB type accommodations. Trying not to spend more than $500 per night on accommodations.
Visiting Scottsdale and the surrounding area the weekend before Christmas is a fantastic time to enjoy holiday decorations, festive events, and the natural beauty of Central Arizona. Here’s a detailed guide for activities and accommodations.
Holiday Festivities and Activities:
- Old Town Scottsdale: The heart of holiday cheer in the city, with festive lights, art galleries, shops, and occasional holiday performances. Look for the annual lighting displays along Main Street and unique holiday markets.
- McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park: A must-see for train lovers and holiday enthusiasts. During the season, they often host a “Holiday Train Display” with lights, model trains, and themed decorations.
- Desert Botanical Garden – Las Noches de las Luminarias: A short drive from Scottsdale, this annual event transforms the garden into a sparkling wonderland of thousands of luminarias with music and evening strolls.
- Cave Creek/Carefree Holiday Events: These charming desert towns often have small holiday parades, festive markets, and local shop decorations, giving a cozy Western holiday vibe.
- Outdoor Activities: Many resorts and neighborhoods have beautiful holiday light displays, perfect for evening strolls. You can also explore hiking trails like Pinnacle Peak or Camelback Mountain during the day for scenic views.
- Sports and Recreation: Pickleball courts are available at several Scottsdale resorts and city parks—book in advance if you want to play during peak holiday weekends.
Accommodation Recommendations:
Given your preference for proximity to shops, restaurants, and activities, here are some options under $500 per night:
- Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch: Beautiful desert resort with pools, golf, and easy access to Old Town Scottsdale.
- The Scott Resort & Spa: Stylish boutique resort near Old Town with pools, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere.
- JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn: Classic resort with southwestern charm, hiking nearby, and easy access to shopping and dining.
- Airbnb Options in Old Town Scottsdale: Look for centrally located condos or townhomes near Main Street for walking access to restaurants, shops, and nightlife.
- Carefree or Cave Creek Vacation Rentals: If you prefer a quieter desert vibe, check local Airbnbs or small boutique inns in these towns.
Tips:
- Book accommodations early as the pre-Christmas weekend is popular and fills quickly.
- Check event schedules for exact dates and times of parades, markets, and lighting displays.
- If hiking or outdoor activities are planned, pack layers for cooler desert evenings and early mornings.
- Reserve pickleball courts in advance, especially at popular resort locations.
This itinerary balances festive holiday experiences with access to Scottsdale’s dining, shopping, and outdoor recreation, making it ideal for a family weekend getaway before Christmas.
